Odds and Ends

By Rachel Draker

Odds and Ends… its the title of a chapter in Anne of Avonlea and when I picked up my tattered copy the other day I noticed those three words were underlined. Why? Because my life is full of them. I stick out. I am Hawaiian/Irish/Native American.

I am a contradiction. When I was seven I asked my Grandmother how to describe my nationality for a project in school and she said, in a tone of reproach – “Just say you’re made up of odds and ends and leave it at that.”

Chris Sligh Won’t Be Bringing “Chubby” Back

Chris Sligh won’t be returning to compete on American Idol after his Tuesday night performance deemed, "a train wreck" by even Randy (Paula seemed out of it and too gently kind from the moments I saw of the ep though).

It’s too bad Chris won’t be "bringing chubby back" as was his adopted Idol slogan.

I didn’t see his performance, but I did see the last song and closing as they went late into House’s time slot. I even ended up voting, too.

I based my call-in on the farewell clips, and I did not vote for Sligh.

Women dominate stage at ‘American Idol’

Wednesday night was the women’s chance to perform on American Idol. The men had disappointed the night before with only a couple of good performances. There was no shortage of talent with the women as more gals than not wowed the judges.

The two that stood out to me were Melinda Doolittle of Brentwood, Tennessee and LaKisha Jones of Flint, Michigan.  Doolittle, the former back-up singer, took control of the stage and was dynamic with her range.  Jones seemed to blow everyone in the building away.

After LaKisha’s performance, Simon Cowell said, “Just to correct someone earlier, that’s the right note. I am very tempted to say to 23 other people, ‘Book your plane tickets home.’ Well, I’m sorry, that was in a different league.”

Simon, Randy and Paula were all very hard on Antonella Barba.  She had caused a bit of a stir on the net when a topless photo of her made the rounds.  In a way it seemed they were trying to sway the voters to not vote for Barba at all. Her performance was truly one of the worst of the evening, but she is very good looking so she might still make the cut.

Access Hollywood has learned that pop star Jennifer Lopez is set to perform on American Idol on April 11th.  There is also a strong rumor that Gwen Stefani will take the Idol stage on March 28th.

Simon Cowell says ‘no’ to wife and kids

American Idol judge Simon Cowell rubs some contestants and viewers the wrong way on the reality singing TV show. So how would Cowell respond to having a wife and children? Well he wouldn’t, Simon doesn’t want to have to deal with either of them.

The American Idol judge rubbished rumours he had proposed to girlfriend Terri Seymour and said they were not trying for a baby.

Looking rather uncomfortable, he told US chat show host Jay Leno: “We’re not trying. Can we talk about American Idol?”

He added: “I’m too old to have a baby.” Cowell, 47, appeared shocked when Leno asked if he was getting married.

And will he marry his long time girlfriend Terrie Seymour?

“When I respect somebody I say I’m not going to marry you, out of respect. I think it’s the decent thing to do. A lot of showbiz marriages don’t work out.”

Cowell did blame bad parenting for allowing tone-deaf children to audition for American Idol.

“I’m presuming the parents have heard them sing before they leave to go to American Idol. They hear what we’re hearing and they go ‘Fantastic, you’re going to win’, so they’re the ones who have been cruel this year.”

Simon stood up for Paula Abdul when Jay Leno asked about her.

“I’ve never seen her drink in my life. She’s always been that way. I’ve never understood a single word she says.”
