There is the attitude that you can get any job with a little bit of hard work and no college level courses. This might be true for some types of jobs, but it isn’t as easy to find a job with only a high school degree as it used to be. My parents got jobs right out of high school and didn’t have to attend college to get these high-paying occupations. Today, it’s more common for someone to complete four years of collegein order to be considered for many types of jobs.

Has No Desire

Some people need desire to spark their decision to attend college, whether it’s a desire to learn or oneto party. I’ve had many friends that came to college just to be able to go to frat parties on a regular basis. This often lasted about one semester and then they got it all out of their system. More than half of these friends would settle down and study, while a small handful decided that it was too much work to take classes and party at the same time, so they dropped out of college.

Doesn’t like School

This reason almost had my sister convinced that she wasn’t going to college. She hadn’t like school since Kindergarten. She was thrilled about it until, on the first day of school the teacher took all her school supplies and made her leave it in her desk. She came home crying her eyes out and that was the beginning of a rocky school careerfor her. Even though she fought hard to keep her head above water, she eventually went on to college and completed her degree in social services. Now she is helping others and enjoying every minute of it.

Gets Homesick

I had friends in elementary school who weren’t allowed to stay the night at anyone’s house until they were 13. I don’t know why this magic number convinced the parents that their child was finally able to handle sleeping over at their friend’s house. Some of these friends would choose not to spend the night, since they felt uncomfortable with it. Most of these kids were the ones in college who got so homesick that theywould cry each night fortheir family and decide they couldn’t handle being away from them for any length of time. These poor kids would drop out of school after about a month.

Too Far from Home

I was completely ready to be out of the house by the time college rolled around. I ended up getting scholarshipsto a college that was two states away from my home state and this sort of freaked my parents out. My sisters did the opposite and took some basic classes at a local college down the street from my parents, which thrilled my parents to no end. There is a small group of people who feel they can’t be away from their family long enough to attend college; it’s just too hard.

Don’t Want to

There are many subcategories under this main category. Some people don’t want to leavefriends to attend college andothers fear the major changes that come along with the college experience. A few don’t have any other reason behind “I don’t want to”. Maybe they truly don’t know why they don’t have any urge to go to college or they might be too worried about the chance of their reason being shot down.

Can’t Afford It

I’ve had many friends that came from poor families. Many of these individuals had to wait until much later in life to begin taking college courses, so they would be able to pay their own way. I was fortunate enough to get scholarships, grants, and work study to help pay for most of my college tuition. There are way too many people who don’t get to attend college just because they are unable to afford it.

I hope none of these 7 reasons are keeping you or a loved one from taking college courses. Even if you are only able to take one or two here and there, every little bit counts. There are so many fantastic things to learn! Are there any reasons not on this list that you’ve heard from people who aren’t attending college? What advice would you give to someone who is indecisive about heading off to college?
