Alas, as is inevitable winter is on its way again (unless you live in the southern hemisphere, in which case bookmark this and come back in six months). With heating bills getting ever more expensive – plus you have to leave the house at some point! – it makes sense to keep warm using clothes (that’s not quite as obvious as it sounds). Here are some useful clothing tips that will help you stay warm as the temperatures start to fall.

Men’s Socks

If like me, you don’t have particularly small feet, then men’s socks are a godsend. It’s a lot easier to find long socks in men’s ranges, and they really do help keep your legs warm. They also tend to come in plain colours, if you don’t like the sometimes gaudy female variety.
Layers

This is an often-quoted tip for keeping warm, and it really does work. Wearing a vest top, t-shirt and jumper, for example, helps trap heat. Throwing a gilet over a jumper is another good tip (mine is fake fur and suede, and I love it!).
Frequently asked questions
Scarf

While I’m not advocating wearing hat, coat and scarf indoors, a light scarf is good for preventing your neck and throat from getting cold. As well as keeping you warm, scarves come in infinite variety and look so stylish (something that can be hard to achieve when you’re wrapped up in layers).

If it’s particularly cold, or you suffer from cold feet, then put on two pairs of socks. I’ve even been known to put on three pairs. Hands and feet are naturally bound to get colder, and having cold feet is utterly miserable!
Hat

In winter, I never go out without a hat. It really is true that you lose a lot of body heat through the head, so on with that hat! Like scarves, there are so many styles available. Many people think that they don’t suit hats, but there will be a style that suits you. Anyway, it’s better than being cold!

Long Sleeves

Now, when I say long sleeves, I mean too long sleeves. My arms are quite short, so I usually end up having to fold over the cuffs of jumpers. However, in winter those too-long sleeves become a distinct advantage, as I can keep my hands warm with them!
Zip It!

If you’re going to be moving from cold place to warm place, then a zipped jumper is easier to slip on and take off. For example, some rooms or areas of a work building can be colder than others. So when you need to, just slip that zip jumper on, without having to contort yourself.
Tight Fit

What if you want to wear patterned or fishnet tights, but it’s just too cold? Simply slip them on over a pair of plain tights. It could be fun to wear fishnets over coloured tights (preferably not too bright, unless you’re young enough to get away with it.
Do you have any tips on what to wear to beat the winter chill? Are you lucky enough to live somewhere warm all year round and don’t have to worry about getting cold?
