This hardcore recycling only for the real eco-warriors among us who can hack it. These notebooks and pads are made entirely from discarded paper collected and assembled by hand in India. They don’t bleach them, reconstitute them, reprocess them — the used paper is folded and bound in a direct form of recycling which enables the owner to write on the reverse of the printed pages. The books come in three sizes and a variety of colours from Sukie.

Whit McLeod’s folding wine barrels chair
It’s nice to have furniture that’s kind to the planet, as well as being pleasing to the eye. This chair by Whit McLeod is made from recycled 70 gallon oak wine barrels. It folds down into a slight, but perfect curve, with each individual slat fitting seamlessly with the next. Each chair has the vineyard’s name branded on the underside, so you know exactly where your chairs have come from.

Recycled bottle goblets from the Natural History Museum
Check out some interesting green gifts from the Natural History Museum’s shop. Obviously recycled products are becoming somewhat cult items, and these glasses and goblets hide little that they used to be good old beer bottles. If you’re so much of a beer fan that you’d prefer your wine to come in a beer bottle, then these are one step closer to your dream. The Sol goblet is priced at £12, and the Grolsch at £15 and like all good things these days, you don’t actually have to go there, but you can order them online. Although for anyone who can make it, the museum is a phenomenal experience for all. I think I might still have that crystal I bought in their shop in something like 1988.

Government to encourage fines and rewards system for rubbish
The environment secretary, David Miliband announced today that he is introducing a host of measures that he hopes will bring our recycling and waste management up to European standards. He is pledging that the UK will recycle 50% of its waste by 2020. The primary method he appears to be using to achieve this is to allow local councils to ‘fine’ households that do not recycle and ‘reward’ those that do. Of course there are other measures to go with this policy, such as allowing people to opt out of undirected junk mail, and a 25% reduction in the environmental impact of plastic bags in the next year and a half. Sounds good in theory, but how it will work in practise remains to be seen. The real cause of the problem seems to have been ignored.

Billboard ‘Baby Bags’ by WAS
It took me ages to accept I actually needed a special bag to keep all the random bits and pieces you carry once you’ve had a baby, and when I did give in, it took even longer to find one that wasn’t pink or frilly. If only I’d known about WAS bags. The Kiwi company save old billboards from a grim landfill death, and turn them into funky bags, including a range especially for bambinos…

Connection introduces UK’s first carbon neutral chair
The Huddersfield based furniture company, Connection, is not sitting on it’s green conscience, well actually it is. The EcoStart is the UK ’s first carbon neutral office chair, made with 52% recycled materials it is also 98% recyclable by weight. But the big development here is that Connection had their manufacturing process analysed by one of Europe’s leading sustainability consultancies to ensure that its carbon footprint was as low as possible. This analysis took into account the product’s materials, manufacture, transport, use and disposal at every stage of its development. That’s a pretty committed company. The EcoStart is also made with interchangeable upholstery pads so your boss doesn’t chuck out the chair when it gets a bit tatty. It’s another proof that looking after the environment can be cost effective for business too.
