You must have read one of those lists of "classic items to have in your wardrobe." I'm always a little sceptical about such lists, which invariably include a white shirt and the LBD. Now, I love the LBD, but don't like white shirts, as I find them too dull. So I've put together my own version of classic items I'll always have in my wardrobe.

Suede Boots
Will suede boots ever go out of fashion? Of course not! My winter wardrobe isn't complete without them. With or without heels, suede boots (there are some very good fake versions too) are a must, going beautifully with a dress or skirt.
Print Scarf

Since most winter coats come in plain colours, a print scarf makes the perfect accessory. Not only will it keep you warm, but it adds a nice contrast to the coat. My favourite is leopard print.
Frequently asked questions
Black Stilettos
The footwear version of the LBD. Black shoes go with just about everything, but to avoid looking too dull, pick a pair with an interesting feature (nothing too outlandish, or they'll miss being classic by a mile). Opt for details like an ankle strap, contrast fabric or front trim.
Jeans
Jeans will never, ever go out of fashion, providing you don't pick something awful like stonewash. The trick is to buy darker denim, and once you find the perfect fit, buy three pairs. That way you will have plenty of wear out of them before having to go jeans shopping again.
Fitted Sweater

My favourite style is a v-neck, which I wear with smart jeans. I have several sweaters in different colours. The basic black one I picked up for a few dollars looks great with either a bright t-shirt peeping out, or a striped shirt.

Bag
This doesn't have to be an expensive model, so forget about $800 Burberry bags. My classic bag is a flea market bargain in velvety brown with fake fur trim, which is big enough to accommodate everything, looks smart, and will never date.
Plain T-Shirts

I love my slogan t-shirts, but plain ones are a classic. I go for t-shirts without a ribbed trim, fairly fitted in the body, and with slightly loose sleeves. It's best to pick fairly muted colours that go with different items in your wardrobe if you want something that will never date.
Flat Sandals
Heels come and go in summer footwear — are wedges out this year? — but flats will never die. They're so practical for keeping your feet comfortable in the heat, and there's an infinite variety of styles. Just watch out for sandals that will be "out" next year — gladiator shoes will inevitably date.
What are your classic items? Do you stick to the "white shirt and good handbag" list, or do you have your own favorites?
