When you leave the comfort of your home, you make yourself more vulnerable to danger and you open up a world of safety hazards. I’m not trying to scare you by saying this. It is the reality of our world. However, there are things you can do to make yourself feel more secure. Here are 8 ways to keep yourself safe on the street.
1. Plan Your Route

Make sure that the route you pick is a safe one. This is very important whether or not you are familiar with a place. Stay away from places that are known to be crime hot spots. Stick to streets that are crowded so you can call for help if needed. Don’t go anywhere that is dark and suspicious.
2. Act Confident

Act confident when walking on the streets. Keep your back straight and your hands out in the open. Look people in the eye and don’t act nervous.
3. Be Observant

Even if you are familiar with the place, be sure to pay attention to your surroundings. Notice the people around you and events that are going on. Resist the urge to use an mp3 player.
4. Follow Your Instincts

When you sense danger, don’t question yourself. Find a different route or another way to get to your destination. If you feel like you are being followed, cross the street. Keep moving until you find a busy area. If you need to, don't be afraid to ask for help.
5. Be Accessible

Let people know where you are going. Bring your mobile phone with you so you can easily call for help or assistance. Make sure that your phone is fully charged and has credit.
6. Learn Practical Self-defense

There are many ways you can defend yourself without having to take a full-fledged martial arts class. There are classes that teach practical self-defense. You can use personal possessions to ward off attackers. Some of these things are: umbrella, pen, and even your perfume or cologne.
7. Carry Self-defense Items

Some examples of these items are personal attack alarm, pepper spray, and stun gun. Carrying self-defense items with you will help you feel safer and less vulnerable. However, don’t be too complacent when walking on city streets.
8. Keep Moving

Don’t stop walking especially in empty or less crowded streets. When a car approaches you, keep walking. Don’t stop to talk to anyone if you are all alone.
You never know when danger could be lurking around the corner. There isn’t much that you can do to be a hundred percent safe. However, with these street safety tips, you can at least be prepared for emergencies and problems you might encounter.
