8 Items for the Perfect Travel Makeup Kit ...

When I travel, I like to pack as compactly as possible, so that I don’t have to drag a heavy suitcase, and can also save space for any purchases made while away. Unfortunately, most of my makeup is not very portable, being in large sets. So I need a small makeup kit. In a previous post, I wrote about some great sets, but now I’m going to suggest some items if you prefer to build your own kit.

1 Laura Mercier Eye Palette

Laura Mercier Eye Palette Price: $28 at shop.nordstrom.com
This is a very compact compact! It’s so slimline that it will take up no space at all in your makeup bag. There is a choice of warm and cool colours; I prefer the cool set, as I think the colours are more versatile for day and night makeup.

Frequently asked questions

2 Mini Mascara

Mini Mascara Price: $9.50 at sephora.com
Who’s going to get through a full-sized mascara on a trip away? A mini version is just what you need! Alternatively, try tinting your lashes, but don’t forget that skin test first …

3 Tinted Moisturiser

Tinted Moisturiser Price: $8 at sephora.com
We mustn’t forget a base! I like to use a tinted moisturiser when travelling, so that I get sun protection, moisturiser and cover in one product. That’s smart use of space! I don’t like a heavy base or powder anyway, so a tinted moisturiser works fine for me.

4 All-in-one Base

All-in-one Base Price: $20 at thebodyshop-usa.com
Alternatively, if you like a stronger base than tinted moisturiser can provide, an all-in-one face base is ideal. Not only do you get foundation and powder in one product, but it can be easily applied with a sponge (included here), which saves on packing brushes and other tools.

5 Estee Lauder ‘Lipstick Luxuries’

Estee Lauder ‘Lipstick Luxuries’ Price: $37.50 at shop.nordstrom.com
I thought judging from the price these lipsticks must be mini sizes, but no, they’re full-sized! I’d pick out one light and one strong colour to take with me when travelling, but the advantage of this set is that it comes with a box to keep the lipsticks together. So if you like a variety of colours when you’re away, the box will keep things tidy and make good use of space.

6 Blotting Papers

Blotting Papers Price: $8 at sephora.com
Do you like a tinted moisturiser, as I do, but need some powder to deal with shine? Then for travelling purposes, blotting papers are ideal. There’s no need to fuss with a brush, just pull out a sheet and that shiny nose is history!

7 Josie Maran Face Wipes

Josie Maran Face Wipes Price: $12 at sephora.com
Face wipes are a very practical option when it comes to travelling. There are a huge number to choose from, so go for wipes like these that are gentle enough to be used on the eyes as well (so no need for separate eye remover).

8 Paul & Joe Makeup Bag

Paul & Joe Makeup Bag Price: $34.48 at asos.com
Of course, you’ll need a gorgeous makeup bag to keep everything in! I love this pale blue bag by Paul & Joe, with a subtle paisley print giving just the right touch of interest. Makeup does have a way of getting everywhere, so the wipe-clean interior is nice and practical.

What are your makeup holiday habits? Do you pack a ready-made kit, or take more makeup than outfits? Or do you prefer a makeup-free face? Do you find yourself mesmerised by the duty-free bargains?
