Know Your Camera

It is always important that you know your camera. You buy the latest one out there, come home, rip open the box and fiddle with the device. You should take time to read through that manual, study it! If you buy it, then you owe it to yourself to learn about it. The manual is there for a reason.
Learn How to Control Your Flash

One of the most important things to learn would be how to control the flash. I hate relying on that automatic flash. When taking outdoor photos, it would be a good idea to turn the flash on in order to illuminate the subject. This is especially true if they are in the shade. Sometimes, when you use the flash indoors, this can result in unnatural skin color and those harsh glares on the photographs.
Frequently asked questions
Play with the Macro Mode

Nearly every digital camera will have a macro mode. This is great for taking close up shots of objects such as insects or flowers. On the Canon PowerShot S500 I have, this is represented by a flower icon. Pic a subject, then turn the macro on. Get as close to it as your camera will allow you to. Before depressing the shutter button, make sure the camera is focused properly.
Hold the Camera Level

Holding the camera level is a basic rule of photography. Most digital cameras come with the LCD, so you can cause it to frame your shots properly. Next time you are shooting, try to find the horizontal lines and use them as guides. As an example, when you are taking a photo of the sunset, use the horizon.
Use a Tripod

This is a big tool in the photography world. It is useful when you are trying to capture those fast moving objects or taking shots that are under low light. It is also great for taking night shots of the city. The tripod you choose should be convenient to carry. You do not need to use a big one.

Play with the ISO Setting

The ISO setting is very useful in digital cameras. This is what controls the sensitivity to light. If you are taking a photograph of a still object, such as a flower, then you should use low ISO settings. This will allow for a longer shutter speed and cleaner image. If you are shooting a moving object, such as a baby with a toy, then the ISO setting should be 400. A higher ISo is going to give a faster shutter speed and is going to require less light. This is going to produce noisier photos.

Of course, you know that it is important to have enough memory capacity. Just as you need enough rolls of film when you are using those traditional cameras, enough memory capacity is important. It is horrible to be on a vacation, taking photographs and run out of space.
