If you don’t know the name of Cheryl Cole you soon will as she is due to be one of the judging panel on USA X Factor, Simon Cowell’s alternative to American Idol. Cheryl is a former talent show winner herself having been one of the singers chosen to form Girl’s Aloud on a UK series of Pop Idol. She’s a darling of the press and all of us in the UK and let’s hope you take care of her because she is only on loan.
So just why do we love her?
… as celebrities go. She lives in the limelight but she is no sleaze magnet. All throughout her much publicized break up from top English soccer star Ashley Cole she remained a picture of dignity. And she’s a friend of the second British Royal family – the Beckhams.
Geordie is the name of people hailing from Tyneside (Newcastle) in NE England. They speak with a funny accent and Geordie girls have a reputation of being the most scantily clad party animals in the UK. Even in freezing temperatures, skimpy tops are the order of the day.
It might have started as a bit of a gag when she wore a militariesque outfit in her first solo video but the salute she used then has now become her trademark.
In the early days of Girl’s Aloud, Miss Tweedie, as was then, was cautioned for an assault on a girl in a nightclub. Cheryl may have put her brawling days behind her but she still knows how to pick a cat fight. She’s had public spats with Lily Allen, Charlotte Church and fellow X Factor judge Dannii Minogue as well as fashion designer Julian McDonald. She also doesn’t mind squaring up to Simon Cowell.
She reportedly spent $180,000 on her wedding dress (well that was a good investment n’est-ce pas?), says she always wear matching underwear and has become a style icon.
We Brits consider WAGs a bit of a social disease rather than a status and when Cheryl was married to Ashley the Cheat she never really got stuck into it with the other footballer’s wives. "Footballers wives are just as bad as benefit scroungers. These women have nannies, they don't cook or clean, and never do a days work. What kind of aspiration is that?" Well said, girl.
Cheryl is the face of L’Oreal shampoo in the UK and the ad tag line is because we’re worth it. Do we believe the shampoo can transform our hair because Cheryl says it can – you bet ya!
I think the jury well may be out when Cheryl hits US screens but until then I have just one question: Paula Abdul or Cheryl Cole?
