Oh dear. The other person just won’t know what to say. It’s often very difficult to guess, so don’t put them in that position.

Look, what’s wrong with being single? Or maybe I’m heartbroken from a failed relationship and don’t want to think about dating again. Or gay.

Or its variant – "when are you going to start a family?" Maybe the person has fertility problems, or is just plain disinterested in the idea. Either way, it’s their business.
