AWS Hero of the Week: The Inspiring Story of Martha Rivera Alanis
By Jennifer • Jun 2, 2011 MD

You may not have heard of Martha Rivera Alanis before, but this courageous, quick-thinking kindergarten teacher quickly became an extraordinary hero. In a moment of intense crisis, her calm response and dedication to protecting her young students captured hearts around the world, proving how powerful extraordinary leadership in the classroom can truly be on All Women Stalk.

During a frightening drug-related shootout directly outside her classroom in Monterrey, Mexico, Martha Rivera Alanis took immediate action. She calmly instructed her five- and six-year-old students to lie face-down on the floor and led them in singing popular children's songs to keep them focused, calm, and distracted from the gunfire outside. As part of her required safety protocol for the school board, she recorded a brief one-minute clip of the incident on her mobile phone. The moving video of the incident quickly went viral, earning Alanis praise from around the globe. She was later honored with a civic valor award by Nuevo Leon State Governor Rodrigo Medina de la Cruz.

Here are key takeaways from Martha Rivera Alanis's extraordinary response during the crisis:

  • Immediate Calm: Prioritized emotional safety by singing children's songs to prevent panic.
  • Quick Protocol: Instructed all students to lie flat on the floor away from windows.
  • Humble Leadership: Focused entirely on student welfare rather than personal recognition.

Despite five fatalities occurring on the street outside, Martha Rivera Alanis remained remarkably humble about her actions. She insisted that she was not seeking fame or public accolades, stating that she simply wanted to show the reality educators face and was merely fulfilling her duty to keep her students safe. Her selfless attitude and unwavering presence of mind remind us of the profound impact dedicated teachers have every day.

The YouTube clip of the classroom activity breaks your heart. My youngest is the same age, I can only imagine the anguish the parents feel everyday in an environment like that. Ms. Martha Rivera Alanis embodies the honor, compassion, & bravery in the face of adversity. She is what many wish they could be under extreme stress. There is no easy answer to the rampant drug problems in the United States or in Mexico. Drugs tear apart families, spiral communities into poverty , and ravage individual's health. There is no pretty picture or speech to cover up the naked brutality & horrors it brings. We can only hope that people like this teacher remain firm, have faith, and a turn of the tides in this war. If you doubt it's impact, read a few stories out Eastern Kentucky about Meth related deaths with children to help broaden your perspective. This problem is ours too.
