Family Portraits
What better way to remember the old year and celebrate the new one? Mind, this could be done with friends as well, or with friends and family, but it's a great way to remember and even immortalize the holiday. You can make it a traditional picture or just a candid shot that everybody receives a copy of, but either way, snapping the shot right at midnight is one of the best ways to ring in the New Year.
Time Capsule
I find this idea intriguing, and it will work in so many different cases. You and your spouse or significant other can create a time capsule filled with memories of your relationship, to be opened up at a distant anniversary. You and your friends can put in memorabilia covering the span of your friendships. You and your family can put in an item for each year you've spent celebrating together – the possibilities are endless.
Frequently asked questions
Group Resolutions
New Year's resolutions are often made to be broken, you know? But making group resolutions can be a great idea. Not only is it fun, but those resolutions are harder to break because you're in it together with other people, whether it's friends, family, or both.
Throw a Theme Party
Theme parties are incredibly fun, especially during New Year's Eve. The 1920s were so full of Hollywood glam, gangster smoothness, and flapper fantabulousness, this theme is a really decadent way to ring in the New Year. You can make bathtub gin and Voe-Doe-Di-Oh-Doe all night! Then again, you might want to channel the 1950s or dress up like Flower Children in celebration of the '60s. You might try a movie theme, a book theme, or a superhero theme -- it's all up to you!
Get Pyrotechnic
Fireworks! Whether they're professionally or you and your friends set off firecrackers and snakes (or whatever; I know virtually nothing about buying fireworks, I'm too afraid of blowing myself up so I always leave it to the professionals), this is a fantastic way to ring in 2013. Just make sure you don't tick off your neighbors or anything.

Hit the Town
A tried and true method, heading out to your favorite bars and clubs is an awesome way to celebrate New Year's. As long as you're careful – always watch your drink, no drinking and driving, et cetera – you can have a lot of fun. Hitting the town with a group of your best friends can create one of the most memorable holidays ever.
New Year, New Time Zone
Taking a trip is always a great option as well. This time, however, really go for it and take the celebration into another time zone. You don't necessarily have to hop the pond or anything; even if you only head somewhere that's an hour ahead or behind you, it still counts!
ZOMBIE NEW YEAR
What? So this counts as a theme party too. I couldn't resist; have you noticed how chic zombies are lately? They're still one of the hottest supernatural trends. I don't exactly know what you could do at Zombie New Year, but I'm guessing a brains cake would be part of the package.
And, of course, you can always go the romantic route and spend the night alone with your lover. I'm leaning more toward that option, but what about you? Got any other tips for ringing in 2013? Anybody having Zombie New Year?
