The Odd Anatomical Art of Joseph Barbaccia ...

As I'm sure y'all have noticed by now, I'm a big fan of art that isn't ... well, the art I like isn't run-of-the-mill, to say the very least. I like odd things, original things, unique things, and I think I've found the motherlode. I almost don't even know how to describe what I'm about to show you, except to say that it's very anatomical -- and very anatomically correct. Don't worry, I won't be showing you anything dirty! However, if you head to artist Joseph Barbaccia's website, you're definitely going to see some very interesting stuff. For now, however, feel free to feast your art-loving eyes on these examples of Joseph's odd anatomical art.
Artistically speaking, I think this is my favorite sculpture. The great thing about Barbaccia's work is that it looks incredibly lifelike, down to the fingernails and the knuckle lines. In this piece I love that it's a woman's hand, and that he's turned an average finger-pointing gesture into something beautifully lethal. The red nails definitely help, don't you think?
The artist does a lot of work with hands and fingers, as you can see. If anything, these "scissor fingers" are even more lifelike than the ones seen in the gun sculpture. You can see everything -- and, again, an average, every day gesture is given a new, literal interpretation, which is always neat. However, it has to be said that Joseph Barbaccia's work doesn't always make that much sense. Sometimes you have to work a little harder to understand his pieces...
Like with this one. I'll be honest, I don't get what hairy bellies have in common with cheese graters, and if I'm missing something subtle (or glaringly obvious), please don't hesitate to let me know. That being said, as it stands, I think I like this sculpture because it's so incongruous. And, again, it's definitely lifelike -- maybe a little too realistic, but to me, that's what makes it really cool!

There are tons more pieces -- again, just check out the artist's page! And let me know what you think of his sculptures, which one you like the best, and why. Maybe it's just me, but pieces like this ... I bet we can think of a lot to talk about!
