Scrubs star John C. McGinley married yoga teacher Nichole Kessler on Saturday, his rep confirms exclusively to PEOPLE.
The couple, who dated for two and a half years before McGinley proposed in August, wed at their home in Malibu before about 30 family members and friends.
The night before, McGinley and John Cusack hosted a welcome dinner in place of a rehearsal dinner.
At the Saturday evening ceremony, the bride wore a blush gown by Le Sposa Di Gio and carried a bouquet of Dutch “Shirley Temple” peonies from LA Botanicals. She walked down the aisle with McGinley’s 9-year-old son, Max.
Afterwards, guests dined on sushi from Nobu Malibu and a three-tiered wedding cake by Mäni’s Bakery in Los Angeles.
McGinley, 47, who plays the sarcastic Dr. Perry Cox on the NBC comedy, and Kessler, 34, who is also a birthing doula, first met through Max, McGinley’s son with ex-wife Lauren Lambert.
Max, who has Down syndrome, approached Kessler on the beach while McGinley was playing fetch with his dogs. “Max went over to this hot blonde behind me and I was just aghast,” McGinley told PEOPLE in August. “I was like, ‘Max, you get the dogs. I’ll talk to the hot blondes.’ And so we switched.”
What makes their relationship work? “John makes me laugh,” Kessler told PEOPLE. “He brings strength into my life and he challenges me to be more of a person than I ever thought I could be.” Quipped McGinley, “Nicole is a better athlete than me. She’s just flat out better.”
