John Mayer and Jessica Simpson have called it quits.

A source close to the couple tells Usmagazine.com, “[John] was just over her. He wasn’t into her anymore. He was ready to move on.”

Seconds another source: “Jessica and John are done. She is really bummed, but wants to put her best foot forward and continue being out and about. She is just having fun and not interested in any new boys.”

But don’t count them out yet. Another friend close to the couple tells Usmagazine.comthat the split “is more of a cooling down.”

“The same sense of excitement and interest just isn’t there as much,” says the source. “I have no sense of a tearful breakup or anything like that. It’s just losing steam. It is more of a separation.”

Simpson, 26, jetted to the Cannes Film Festival earlier this week where she and her father were seen at the My Blueberry Nights after party on Wednesday night mingling with the likes of Harvey Weinstein and Norah Jones past 2:30 a.m.

Meanwhile, the “Waiting On the World to Change” singer was back in NYC attending Chris Rock’s surprise performance at The Comedy Cellar on Saturday night, and partied at Stereo last night with comedian Sherrod Small and model Jessica Stam.

Mayer chose not to accompany Jessica to the famed film fest, possibly due to the split, and also because “he is not interested in movie people or being around that, and she is trying to establish herself as an actress. He is happy being a musician and around music people.”

Instead, Mayer, 29, will spend the next week and a half relaxing in New York until his next tour kicks off on June 1.

“The truth is we won’t really know if it is done for good until he goes on tour and we see if she is there with him again,” says the source. “That is when we will know if this is definitive.”

Mayer’s rep tells Usmagazine.com, “We do not comment on the personal lives of our clients.”
