10 Most Scenic Places to Go by Train in the UK

1. Darlington to Edinburgh

This is a magnificent journey along the East Coast Main Line, showcasing some of Britain's most spectacular landscapes. As the train heads north from Darlington, you will catch striking views of national treasures like the historic Durham Cathedral standing tall above the River Wear and the iconic Angel of the North sculpture in Gateshead. As you pass through charming northern villages and approach Edinburgh, the tracks hug dramatic coastal cliffs, offering sweeping vistas of the North Sea. It is a truly stunning route that turns travel time into a sightseeing experience.

2. Settle to Carlisle

Renowned as one of the world's most scenic rail routes, this line runs straight through the heart of the famous Yorkshire Dales and passes through Dent station, the highest mainline station in England. The views don't end when you arrive, however, with the amazing Carlisle Castle close to the tracks. Built in 1066, and the scene of many, many battles, its now open to the public and its a truly breathtaking sight. It's one of my favourite places to visit!

3. Exeter to Penzance

This is a dramatic journey, through rock arches and tunnels just above the coast means the whole journey has brilliant views, and they don't stop when you get to Penzance. I love this picture of a Penzance sunset...the whole place is so tranquil and pretty that you'll never want to leave. Make sure you enjoy fresh, traditional fish and chips in the harbour while taking in the maritime views!

4. Iverness to Wick and Thurso

Traveling along the Far North Line, this is a varied journey with sweeping views as you travel across Scotland. Sometimes there is just untouched wilderness—a view of open fields and country roads for miles—but there are also ancient castles, soaring viaducts, and whisky distilleries along the way, not to mention the amazing mountain views. The journey travels the length of Scotland on the steepest railway track in the country. It's amazing!

5. London to Fort William

Operated by the famous Caledonian Sleeper, this overnight train is an incredible journey. You get a special room with a comfortable bed and the soothing sound of the wheels against the track. You'll wake up to sunrise on the twisty tracks of the Scottish Highlands. London is an amazing city full of life, and Fort William is a stunning destination surrounded by majestic peaks. It's a trip everyone should take at least once.

6. Swansea to Shrewsbury

This track covers 121 miles of rolling hills and tunnels, running just a few times a day along the Heart of Wales Line. It passes the twisty Tywi river, Radnor forest, and the Loughor estuary, so you won't be bored of things to look at. Swansea Marina is a beautiful sight and looks stunning during rain storms...fish and chips there are mandatory, and I love the tiny red kites that decorate the sky on the way to Shrewsbury. A calming and amazing journey.

7. Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh

Another stunning journey, this one displays craggy mountains, sleepy lochs, and a rocky coastline...you'll see the best bits of Scotland. There is a perfect mix of watery landscapes, mountains, and moorlands before you arrive at the Western coast. I love Inverness Castle, and the views from the top are amazing. Make sure you take your camera to capture the breathtaking scenery!

8. Bridgnorth to Kidderminster

Shropshire is a beautiful county, and traveling via the heritage Severn Valley Railway is the perfect way to view it. Bridgnorth station is small and quaint, and the track follows patchwork fields and old cottages with flowery front gardens...I love the views as the train runs past the winding river! You can even go and see historic landmarks along the way that reflect the rich heritage of the town.

9. Llandudno to Blaenau Ffestiniog

Wales has some stunning views, and taking the Conwy Valley train is the best way to see them. The climb up to Blaenau passes through meadows filled with wild flowers and local wildlife, while old slate quarries make stunning historical landmarks. The views are stony, untouched, and utterly stunning from start to finish.

10. Caernarfon to Porthmadog

This amazing journey along the Welsh Highland Railway shows just how great the views are...the track climbs the lower points of Mount Snowdon, through the Beddgelert Forest and over the Aberglaslyn Pass, which was recently voted the best view in Britain. A stunning journey through mountain scenery that you'll never forget.
