Paris Sentenced to 45 Days in Jail

By celebrity

Looks like Paris Hilton will have to cancel her summer plans - the heiress was sentenced to 45 days in jail this afternoon for violating the terms of her probation by repeatedly driving with a suspended license. "[Hilton] disregarded everything...and didn't care and kept driving," a Superior Court judge said as Hilton's parents looked on in an LA courtroom today. Hilton testified at the hearing, telling the court, "I never would've been driving if my license was suspended. I follow the law. I'm followed by cameras every single day... I respect the law... I want you to know I'm very sorry and will pay complete attention to everything from now on." Hilton claimed she had repeatedly been told by her rep that her license had only been suspended for 30 days and that she could still drive for work-related matters. Prosecutors called three police officers to the stand who had each pulled Hilton over on separate occasions. The first officer was on the scene at her DUI arrest last September and testified that he'd warned Hilton that her license might be suspended, and the other two officers told the Simple Life star that it definitely was suspended. Prosecutors also submitted a written warning from the California Highway Patrol given to - and signed by - Hilton dated January 15 verifying the license suspension. The heiress also failed to enroll in an alcohol-education program by the specified deadline of February 12. Hilton's lawyer believes the sentence is unjust, saying, "I'm shocked and disappointed at the sentence by the judge. To sentence Paris Hilton to jail is uncalled for, inappropriate and ludicrous. She was singled out for who she is. She's been selectively targeted. Paris was honest in her testimony. We plan to appeal. Shame on the system."
