Not everyone wants to wear a bikini on the beach, especially if you like swimming rather than just lazing in the sun. There are plenty of other styles though, both one and two piece. So I’ve picked out some alternatives to the skimpy bikinis!

This one piece suit actually has a cutout back, so it’s like a bikini but with added security. The pink snake print is funky and eye-catching. On a practical note, it’s machine washable, so easily cleaned.

This could be the suit for you if you like bikinis but want something with a little more coverage on top. It’s the perfect middle ground between a bikini and a swimsuit. The pattern is really interesting too.

This tankini has a very retro look – you can imagine Dita von Teese posing elegantly wearing it. In fact, 50 years ago bikinis were much less revealing than today’s versions, with fuller tops and bottoms.

I love the bright raspberry colour of this swim top – makes a change from black! The matching bottoms are available at $9.98. Or how about opting for a contrasting colour? Buy two sets like this, and you would have a versatile mix-and-match set.

Most plus-size swimwear comes in horrid florals that your granny wouldn’t be seen dead in. So it’s nice to find a design that is very different. This halter-neck suit (not recommended if you are very busty) comes in a beautiful metallic blue with a patterned middle.

A monokini is another very good compromise between bikini and swimsuit. This piece is like a bikini, but has a criss-cross of cords between the top and bottom, thus giving the look of a bikini but with no worries about the top slipping!

This might be in black, but the one-shoulder detail adds some interest to the style. The bikini pants are not too skimpy, and the strap is fastened to the top with a ring.

Another retro style, this would look fabulous on a girl with some curves. It definitely has that fifties beach beauty look about it!
So, how many bikinis do you own? Are you devoted to skimpy bikinis, or would you try one of these alternative styles?
