Tips for dealing with dry skin in the winter ...

Winter can be very unkind to our skin… As temperatures drop and heating kicks in, the air becomes much drier both outdoors and indoors. Your skin usually pays the price, which can be felt through tightness and dry, flaky patches. Luckily, with a little extra care, you can keep your skin feeling soft and comfortable all year long. Here are some key tips!

Dress for the weather

First and foremost, your clothing is super important when it comes to protecting your skin against harsh weather conditions. If you live in a place that gets icy cold or biting winds in the winter, being outdoors even for short periods of time will impact your skin.

Gloves, for one, are a non-negotiable piece of clothing, as hands are one of the first parts of your body to react to the cold. Additionally, a hat will protect your scalp skin, while turtlenecks and scarves will safeguard your chest and neck. The less exposed you are to the cold, the less immediate effect it will have on your skin.

Moisture, moisture, moisture

One of the most important steps in your winter skincare routine is adding moisture where you can. For instance, instead of using normal shower gels or soaps that may be great in the summer, opt for gentle, hydrating cleansers that won’t leave your skin feeling tight after washing. Look for products that are enriched with moisturising ingredients, such as glycerin or ceramides. Alternatively, consider using a shower oil for soft and smooth skin as a replacement for your normal cleanser during the dry season.

Moreover, if you don’t already use moisturising creams or lotions in your skincare routine, this is the time to start. You can apply a moisturiser immediately after your shower, while your skin is still slightly damp, as this can help trap moisture, or right before bedtime. For very dry patches (e.g. elbows or heels), use a stronger balm that will prevent moisture loss even more.

Don’t forget to also protect your hands and lips throughout the day, as these are the exposed areas where products don’t stay all day. Re-apply a hand cream after washing your hands and use a nourishing lip balm whenever your lips start feeling dry.

Add humidity to your home

Since central heating dries out indoor air, using a humidifier can make a significant difference in how your skin feels. It adds moisture back into the air, helping your skin stay hydrated. This is particularly important during the night time, as you spend 8 or more hours sleeping in a dry room. Similarly, if you work from home, your office space could also do with extra moisture. The most practical option is to buy a mobile humidifier that you can move from one room to another, as and when needed throughout the day.

Winter skincare habits

With the right changes, the winter season does not have to mean dealing with dry, uncomfortable skin for the next few months. Essentially, it’s all about understanding your body’s needs throughout the year and making slight adjustments accordingly.
