There is no doubt that 2010 has been a very newsworthy year. A number of high profile events have appeared on our social, political, ethnic and sexual horizons. To pick the most shocking events of such an eventful year is decidedly a tough challenge, but here is my list of the 8 most shocking news stories of 2010.

2010 has been a bad year for Toyota. It had to recall over 2 million of its vehicles from the roads. First there was a floor mat problem and then there was a problem with sudden acceleration due to faulty gas pedal, a malfunction which caused over 34 deaths across the country.

After WikiLeaks leaked hundreds of thousands of classified documents that severely strained diplomatic relations between several countries and endangered the lives of government operatives, founder Julian Asagne finds himself charged with sex crimes in Sweden.

Last year, the Balloon boy took a chance on his life to become famous. In the year 2010, Pamela Storro deformed herself by splashing acid all over her face and claimed to have been attacked while walking in Washington State Park.

Instantly winning a cult hero status, Jet Blue flight attendant Steven Slater quit his job in style. Bringing to light the conditions flight attendants have to face, Slater cursed out a passenger over the PA system, helped himself to a few beers, activated the emergency exit and then slid down the emergency chute.

The bodies of three missing people from Ohio were found in the hollow of a tree, where they were placed after being wrapped in garbage bags. Thankfully, the daughter of one of the victims was found alive, albeit tied and gagged in the basement of a tree trimmer, Matthew Hoffman, who was recently released from prison.

33 Chilean miners were trapped underground and assumed to be dead when a note alerted authorities to their plight. Although they were sent food, water and other necessary supplies, it took more than two months to get them all out of their underground trap one by one.
As you can see, the most shocking news stories of 2010 encompass everything from the depravity of human beings to the height of courage, strength and moral fiber they are capable of displaying as well as everything in between.
