Celebrate SpiritDay 2011

Today is Spirit Day, a day meant to celebrate diversity, fight intolerance, and embrace love! There have been so many tragic occurrences lately, and bullying has played an enormous part in the loss of too many beautiful people. This is a day where you can come together regardless of age, race, gender, religion, ethnicity, or sexual preference. It's a day of strength, celebration, and promoting the positive. #SpiritDay is trending all over the internet, from Twitter to Tumblr to Facebook and beyond, so let's talk about ways to celebrate this year, next year, and every year after!

Although Spirit Day is considered an LGBT holiday, at its heart it's really about people -- because we're all human! People are turning profile pictures and backgrounds purple to honor the day, but it's about more than color -- and it lasts longer than just a day!

Everyone has their own beliefs but one thing is universal: respect. Even if you can't accept the choices of others, it's easy to respect them. Today, show your love -- to anyone. It could be a family member, a friend, or a stranger on the street. It could be a smile, a hug, or a simple, random act of kindness.

Send out a positive message, do a positive act, or have a positive thought -- it all counts! Celebrate Spirit Day in your heart or out loud.

How do you celebrate the day? How do you show your love and support? Today I hugged the Better Half extra tight, spent time with my friends, and put in hours with both The Trevor Project and the It Gets Better Project! From me to you, on this day that's near and dear to my heart and the hearts of many, many others, happy #SpiritDay!
