I’m always curious about what trends are going to get started each year. Some catch on quickly, while others only seem to last a very short amount of time. I like the ones that come and go every few years. It’s always interesting to see just how many times a trend will be popular before it sticks. Certain hair trends, such as the mullet, don’t seem to want to stay in the past. But, I guess if you can pull it off, go for it! Here are 8 trends on the rise today that I have noticed.

I used to see people hanging out at the grocery store in their jammies and didn’t think anything of it. I myself have stopped by the store to grab some milk for my morning coffee without taking time to get dressed up. Living in a small town, it’s easy to get away with not getting all fancy to go to the store. I’ve noticed kids heading to school in their pjs too and not only during Spirit Week. I’ve even seen some donning a pair of fuzzy slippers to go with their pajama bottoms.

I’m not sure if this is a common trend or just something my sisters, my kids, and friends of all of them do. It might be a generational thing. When I was growing up, my grandmother still had her rotary telephone and Atari games were considered to be top of the line. The youth of today don’t know how to live without technology, so they have resorted to staying connected with their friends in anyway possible. It’s not as if they fall asleep mid-text either. I’ve seen my sisters change into their pjs, brush their teeth, and curl up to go to sleep with a cell phone in their hand.

People have become so involved with the plethora of social networks out there that many of them turn on their computers before getting out of bed. They have to check their Facebook messages, post a new status, or comment on a friend’s status before getting ready to start their own day. I would probably be one of these people if I had an internet connection in the bedroom. Fortunately, for my husband’s sake, my computer can only access the internet from here in the living room.

Have you ever realized just how many blog sites there are online? There are blogs for everything you need; gardening, beauty, fashion, health, shopping, raising kids, taking care of animals, etc. You name it and there’s probably a blog created especially for it. It’s also a great way to be able to share knowledge with tons of other people, as well as making some money on the side. With the constant advancements in technology that occur daily, I don’t see this trend ever disappearing.

Quite a few people take their Day of Rest literally. I remember when Sundays used to consist of a rigid schedule; get up early, go to Sunday school and church, come home and do chores, change clothes and help make fried chicken for brunch, visit with family, do homework, do the second round of chores, and then off to bed. I know many people who work hardest on Saturdays, so they spend Sunday morning catching up on sleep.

These are considered to be a fad for some people and a way of life for most others. Eating healthier has been a popular trend for quite some time, but not many people have the stamina to stick with it for their entire life. Becoming a vegan or a vegetarian takes a lot of commitment. This commitment is sometimes a challenge that cannot be handled by certain individuals. If you live in a community where grocery stores offer a wide variety of foods for vegans and vegetarians, then this lifestyle is feasible. I live in a small community where asking for a veggie burger gets you a series of strange looks.

I can’t remember the last time I rented a movie from the local video store. I bet it’s been at least 5 years. The internet is filled with online movie sources and companies who can supply movies online for a very low fee. If you’re lucky, finding brand new movies online is possible, but sometimes these are poor quality. I use Netflix and love it! My husband and I can watch a movie online in the living room, while the boys use their Xbox and watch a different movie in their bedroom. It’s perfect for everyone and the movies are full length, theater quality, and the movie doesn’t freeze because the DVD is scratched.

The holidays have been made easier with shopping online. I’ve purchased presents for my entire family in a day by using the computer. Going from store to store and fighting the crowds in the mall are a thing of the past. I know I’m not the only one either. Even my grandmother talks about buying things online. I also know there has to be more than just a handful of online buyers, in order to keep these internet stores up and running.
I’m sure there are different trends popping up in your neck of the woods, especially if you live in a large city. There seems to be trends showing up in cities that never make here to the woods. Well, sometimes they do emerge eventually, but this might take 10 years or so! What other trends have you seen that could be added to this list of 8 trends on the rise today? Do you partake in any of them or know of people who do?
