7 Ways to Deal with the Loss of a Pet ...

Do you remember my bearded dragon, Grendel, that I always bragged about on my blog postings? He passed away on September 6, 2010 around 2pm. Each and every day that passes, I miss him. I know, some of you will think I’m strange and say he’s just a lizard, but he is a lizard (a pet) that I had for around 6 years. He loved sitting at my laptop as he watched my type my articles and blogs. I dedicate this blog posting to Grendel.

I have a female bearded dragon, she is 2 years old. Her name is Avikha. When Grendel passed away, it helped to hold her and talk to her. So, hugging up to another pet helped me deal with the loss of Grendel.

Frequently asked questions

6 Make a Good Burial Spot for Him

Where I buried Grendel, I plan on making a flower garden for him. If your dog passes away and there is an oak tree that he loved, then that would be the perfect burial spot for him. When you feel down, go outside and sit by that spot. I did this when my dog, Mafasa died when I was a teenager. It helps, trust me. Some people want to just forget about it, but we all have our own ways of coping with death.

5 Talk to a Friend

When my pet died, it helped me to talk to my friend about it. I also shared pictures of Grendel with them. Of course, my friends knew Grendel and was sad as well. They understood my sadness as they have pets of their own.

4 Time Heals Pain

While their memory will always remain, I find that time heals pain most of all. I will tell you that today, I feel much better than I did a week ago. A week ago my eyes were all red from crying. Yes, I cried over my lizard.

3 Make a Youtube Video

Youtube is popular in today’s world. My husband is making a Youtube video with Grendel’s pictures. I tell you, I have tons of pictures. I took pictures of him almost every day. I even have pictures of him curled up sleeping when he was a month old. I will definitely cry when I see that video.

2 Don’t Let Others Control You

You should not let others control you. Some will try to tell you how you should feel or try to control your feelings. Don’t allow this. If they make fun of you for crying over your pet – then they are not true friends.

If you feel depressed, then you should look into a pet loss support group. You can find a pet loss support group by looking online. You can find them in your area or online. Whichever you feel the most comfortable with is fine. They both have advantages.

Those are 7 ways to deal with the loss of a pet. Just like food has an expiration date, every living thing does. I know it is sad, but it is the way of life. I have a tortoise that has a lifespan of fifty years. There are birds out there that you have to put in your will as they will outlive a human being, but some animals only have a life expectancy of six to fifteen years. This is a sad fact. Enjoy the time you do have with them – love them and care for them like there is no tomorrow. How did you deal with the loss of your pet?
