7 Great Books to Read over the Holidays ...

I’m going to skip the long introduction today, girls, because we’re going to talk about books today and, as you know, these conversations tend to get quite long. Now, I’ve decided to suggest some of my all time favorite books just in case you’re wondering what to read over the holidays. This list will consist of some of the most popular and even classic books you can certainly find in your local library so, don’t worry, there will be no need to buy anything and spend more than you would want. Well, here we go – this is my list of good holiday literature:

1 The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy at amazon.com

You will laugh reading this book, I’ll tell you that! Douglas Adams has actually created a whole new imaginary world and found a very modern way to present it too! Witty remarks will make your eyes water and all those funny comparisons and strange terms are definitely something you’ll get to use in a conversation later on. You want to know what happens when the entire space world starts colliding with the rational thought of a common Earthling who, up until a moment ago, had a planet to live on and some more common problems to worry about? Want to know what happens when the Earth goes “POUF!” in the first chapter? Well, I hope you have a lot of free time on your hands because this book isn’t really the shortest one out there.

2 The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

One of the most amazing books I’ve ever read! In case you’ve somehow managed to “miss it”, definitely plan a trip to the library and rent it over the holidays. If you are a fast reader like me, this book probably won’t take more than a couple of hours of your precious time, so you can decide to read it even if you know your holidays are going to be really busy. Now, I’m not sure how most people saw this book but reading it made me appreciate all the wonderful people I get to call my loved ones a bit more. It made me happy and made me realize that already have all the alchemy I need.

3 Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Don’t you just love a good old fashioned romance? This book will make you travel back into the time when women were true ladies and when men settled their differences on a field at dawn. If you liked the TV series, you’ll enjoy the book even more because it will give you a chance to forget about the modern world and focus on your favorite couple and all their troubles and joys.

4 Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

Cheesy? Maybe. Necessary? Definitely! This is just one of those classic novels you have to read in order to be able to say you’ve actually read something good. I mean, it’s Charles Dickens, that’s like the Porsche of literature. At least in my humble opinion. This book is very dear to me and I liked it so much that I actually decided to do my high school graduation paper on it – You know, the summary, my interpretation of every single chapter and the characters etc. I don’t want to bore you with that now. The main idea is actually quite simple – you must never forget where you come from and think that you’re better than everyone else. However, that’s not the only smart thought embedded in the pages and pages of interesting text so the only thing I can do is suggest you read it and see for yourself.

5 The Black Tulip by Alexandre Dumas

I started reading this book because of three things: 1. I was completely and totally bored 2. A set of books written by this author was the only thing not buried somewhere in the darkness of my attic, covered with 2 inches thick layer of dust 3. Due to the circumstance number 2 and the utterly boring phase number 1, I’ve managed to read all of his novels…all except this one. Anyways, the first chapter was kind of boring and I was almost about to leave the book when the story got interesting. So page by page and I ended up reading the last paragraph and realizing this was one of the most amazing love stories I’ve ever read.

6 La Dame De Monsoreau by Alexandre Dumas

One great thing I’ve forgot to mention about reading Dumas’s work – you’ll actually get to brush up on your History knowledge too because all of his novels are set in real time and usually wrapped around an important event from the French history. He also does a wonderful job of explaining those events and their participants, making them easier to grasp and remember. Now, before you get started on this book, let me give you a little warning first – although its plot is wrapped around a beautiful romantic story, you may find the ending a little bit too disturbing. I won’t tell you what it is, that would be just plain evil, but you might want to have my suggestion number 5 close by too.

7 Hobbit and Silmarillion by J.R.R Tolkien

These are actually two separate books but I’m mentioning them together because they are written by the same author as well as because I’m trying to save some space and trick you into believing that this post isn’t one of those long ones I tend to make. Anyways, so, Hobbit…well, if you loved The Lord of The Rings, you’ll sure love Hobbit because this book actually precedes the famous trilogy and describes the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Frodo’s cousin. This book will definitely make some things clear and I’m really pissed because everybody just act like it isn’t there and like Lord of the Rings is the only cool thing Tolkien has ever wrote. Silmarillion, in the other hand, isn’t really rich with all the drama and action but is a book every true fan of the Tolkien’s fantasy world must read. The beginning is actually quite boring and you’ll have the feeling like you’re reading a phone book, but, If you manage to stick to reading it, you’ll soon discove

r it’s better than you’ve thought.

Have you read all of some of these books girls? What do you think of them? Do you have any new or interesting books you’d like to suggest? Come on now, don’t be shy – I need a good tip on what to read these days, too!
