It's unquestionably the holiday season, even if many parts of the United States have yet to see any snow. Still, there's a pleasant bite in the air, lovely starry nights, and a festive spirit persists wherever you go. But tonight is especially special: it's the first night of Hanukkah! So on behalf of All Women Stalk, I want to wish everyone lighting their menorahs tonight the happiest of holidays!
Although not Jewish myself, I've always been interested in it, especially since taking a Philosophy of Religion course in college. It's a rich and meaningful holiday, with powerful roots in history and deep seated traditions. I remember first learning about the story of Hanukkah from The Rugrats, of all things – the cartoon's Hanukkah special was actually surprisingly informative, especially given the average age-range of the audience (yes, I was a teenager watching it at the time). Although films like, say, 8 Crazy Nights are designed to be totally campy, you still have to appreciate anyone, even Adam Sandler, who tries to bring their traditions to mainstream attention, and highlight the spirit of the holiday for people who may not know anything about it.
As the Festival of Lights kicks off, I want to wish all of you who celebrate it a very happy Hanukkah, and I hope all eight days are filled with love and happiness! Why don't you share some of your favorite traditions with us?
