It’s no secret that celebrities love to dress to impress. They pull out all the stops for every occasion, even if that’s just a trip to the grocery store or a pilates class. However, there’s no doubt about the fact that the pièce de résistance of celebrity style can be seen on the red carpet of the Met Gala each year. These dresses and outfits come in all different shapes and sizes, and some of them have become icons in the fashion world.
1. Rihanna – Met Gala, 2015

Rihanna isn’t your average wallflower. Rather than shying away from the crowd, she makes sure that she shines bright like a diamond for every event – especially for the prestigious Met Gala. In 2015, Rihanna donned this Guo Pei Couture gown, and the embroidered yellow gown even came complete with a giant train, a fur cuff, and even a matching headpiece. She certainly turned heads in this outfit, even though people compared it to an omelet…
2. Cara Delevingne – Met Gala, 2017

While most people know Cara Delevingne for her beautiful flowing locks, she decided to go for something a little different in the run-up to the 2017 Met Gala. She shaved her head and made it the perfect accessory for the event. As if her silver, shining head wasn’t enough, Cara then teamed it up with this incredible Chanel Couture two-piece. Everything from the fitting pants to the low-cut blazer further enhances the notion that she is out of this world. Quite literally, it seems.
3. Jennifer Lopez – Met Gala, 2018

Jennifer Lopez always brings the style to any event, and this was no different at the 2018 Met Gala. With the theme of Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholicism Imagination to abide by, we’re sure we don’t need to tell you that she totally hit the nail on the head. This bedazzled Balmain design perfectly hugged her figure, while also offering clean lines and structure. In fact, we’re not sure what part of this dress we love more. Is it the feathered train that flowed behind her as she walked up the famous stairs? Or the vibrant bodice?
4. Sarah Jessica Parker – Met Gala, 2010

Whether you know her as Sarah Jessica Parker or her iconic character, Carrie Bradshaw, you’ll know that this actress is more stylish than we could ever imagine. She always wears the most incredible outfits, and her 2010 Met Gala gown was a true testament to that. Showing off her floaty, feminine side, Sarah looked just like Carrie in this Halston Heritage dress. Delicately flowing to the ground, Sarah rocked this gown and the headpiece that she wore with it. If only we could afford to buy it ourselves…
5. Emma Watson – Met Gala, 2016

After making her debut as a child in the Harry Potter franchise, Emma Watson has gone from strength to strength. Yes, just look at the stunning ensemble she wore for the Met Gala in 2016! Deceivingly, this is not actually a dress. Featuring a beautiful bodice on top, the bottom of this outfit consists of wide-leg pants covered with its very own train. The best part? Emma made sure that her outfit was sustainable, and the whole thing was designed by the Calvin Klein Collection and made using recycled plastic bottles.
6. Solange Knowles – Met Gala, 2015

While she may still be living in the shadow of her sister, there’s no doubt about the fact that Solange Knowles has become somewhat of a style icon over the years. Not afraid to wear something a little out of the box, she opted for this Giles creation at the 2015 Met Gala. Featuring a futuristic pattern, this dress also came complete with ruffles and a giant piece of fabric circling around the front of her body. Although we can imagine this was pretty awkward and impractical throughout the night, she certainly looked good.
7. Lupita Nyong’o – Met Gala, 2014

Lupita Nyong’o has proven over the course of her career that she isn’t afraid to wear something that others might shy away from, and this has since turned her into a style queen. At the 2014 Met Gala, when the theme was Charles James: Beyond Fashion, Lupita donned this Prada ensemble. As if the bright green color wasn’t enough to make everyone else green with envy, the net-like overlay featuring feathers and jewels would have certainly done the trick. The actress teamed the whole thing off with matching shoes, purse, and headband.
8. Carey Mulligan – Met Gala, 2012

Carey Mulligan has proved to the world that she can not only act but that she can also sing. However, did you know that she could also rock the red carpet? When she was invited to the 2012 Met Gala event, she decided to take the whole event by storm with this Prada dress. Although she didn’t wear a gown like some of the other attendees, this silver and gold knee-length dress looked sophisticated and stylish. With her sleek hairstyle and her dark eye makeup, she looked like the superstar she is.
9. Blake Lively – Met Gala, 2014

We don’t think that we have ever seen Blake Lively wear something that isn’t absolutely stunning and perfect for her figure, but it’s fair to say that she pulled out all of the stops in 2014. For the Met Gala that year, Blake looked like a classic Hollywood starlet in her blush pink Gucci gown. Featuring a form-fitted bodice and a loose train and cape, the whole thing suited her perfectly. As if that wasn’t enough, her luscious locks were tamed into Hollywood curls that looked absolutely stunning. How does she do it?
10. Katy Perry – Met Gala, 2018

If you’re a fan of Katy Perry, you’ll know that this lady would rather go big than go home. As someone who always likes to wear clothes that will garner a huge amount of attention, there’s no doubt about the fact that all eyes were on her in 2018. For the famous Met Gala, Katy donned this Atelier Versace number- complete with giant angel wings. While the gold dress and boots on their own would have stolen the show on their own, Katy took it up a notch with these wings – even though they did look a little uncomfortable.
11. Cardi B – Met Gala, 2018

Cardi B is known for bringing all of the sass to her outfits, and she certainly ticked that box when she walked down the red carpet of the 2018 Met Gala. Following the theme of Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and Catholic Imagination, Cardi B rocked this Moschino look. Featuring all kinds of beading and a huge amount of material, this rapper must have had to deal with some weight as she walked down the red carpet – and that’s before you even get to her baby bump! Despite all of this, it was one of the best looks of the 2018 event.
12. Victoria Beckham – Met Gala, 2008

Back in 2008, Victoria Beckham was in her prime. With her Spice Girls fame behind her, this was the year that Posh Spice started her famous fashion line – so she had to pull out all the stops for her Met Gala appearance. Standing alongside her husband, Victoria donned this vintage Giorgio Armani gown and looked absolutely stunning in the process. Everything from the lace detail to the slit in the middle of the dress showed off her figure and complimented her bright red lips and sleek up-do.
13. Claire Danes – Met Gala, 2016

It’s amazing to see what everyone wears to the Met Gala each year. Female celebrities always pull out the stops, and there’s no doubt about the fact that all eyes were on Claire Danes in 2016. Thanks to the iconic fashion designer, Zac Posen, Claire was able to walk along the red carpet like Cinderella herself. This princess-inspired gown looked fairly simple from afar, but one close-up look was enough to realize that it was less-than-simple. It’s no wonder Zac looked pretty impressed with himself beside her.
14. Rihanna – Met Gala, 2018

Making her second appearance on this Met Gala list is Rihanna, because this is one day of the year that she just can’t get enough of. Like many of her fellow celebrities, Rihanna fully embraced the Heavenly Bodies theme back in 2018 – and this outfit was truly something special. This giant gown and its matching headpiece looked just as expensive as it looks heavy, and she had Maison Margiela to thank for that. Of course, no Met Gala appearance would be complete without some matching Christian Louboutin heels.
15. Donatella Versace - Met Gala, 2023

Usually, the person behind the dresses of other celebrities, Donatella Versace stepped out onto the Met Gala carpet in her very own Versace designed dress, meant to honor the late Karl Lagerfeld. A light pink dress, with crystals, tulle, and fabric flowers, this look paid homage to the Barbie-core that swept the nation in 2023, as well as the Versace collection coming later in the year.
16. Kylie Jenner – Met Gala, 2016

Kylie Jenner may now be on her way to becoming the youngest self-made billionaire in the world, but she was just in the midst of her career takeover in 2016. In an attempt to become one of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, she vowed to pull out all the stops – especially in terms of her fashion. For the 2016 Met Gala, Kylie teamed up with her favorite designer, Olivier Rousteing, to create this beautiful Balmain gown. Covered in diamonds and jewels, Kylie looked like a vision in silver. At just 18 years old, this gown made her look mature and stylish.
17. Bad Bunny - Met Gala 2024

Always going for a bold look, the Puerto Rican star came onto the carpet of the 2024 Met Gala ready to wow the crowd. In a custom outfit by Maison Margiela, he stunned folks in an all black outfit with pops of red. From the jacket to the hat, to the cloth bouquet of flor de maga flowers in hand, the national flower of Puerto Rico, Bad Bunny really showed everyone exactly what a co-chair of the Met Gala should be wearing.
18. Rihanna - Met Gala, 2023

Never one to disappoint the crowds at the Met Gala, Rihanna showed up to the event in 2023 with a look that had every head turning—though she showed up many hours late. A long white gown with a heavily decorate hood created the look pof a Chanel bride, a look typical of Karl Lagerfeld’s fashion shows. She adorned white fingerless gloves and sunglasses and a very fashionable and noticeable baby bump. Now, that’s a look we can’t forget.
19. Sydney Sweeny – Met Gala 2024

Ditching her classic blonde hair for a show-stopping jet-black wig, Sydney Sweeny and her stylist really went all out with a beautiful light blue tulle dress designed by Miu Miu. From the off shoulder sleeve, to the leather black gloves that matched her hair, Sweeny was sparkling—literally—and created a head-turning, contrasting look for the 2024 Met Gala’s carpet.
20. Kim Kardashian – Met Gala, 2019

Kim Kardashian has made no secret about the fact that she loves the Met Gala. Every year, she tries her hardest to beat her outfit from the previous year, and there’s no doubt about the fact that her 2019 gown was a knockout. This Thierry Mugler creation was quite literally dripping in diamonds, and the wet-look effect seemed to go down a storm. Kim has since noted that she really struggled to breathe in this tight-fitting dress, and we definitely believe her on that one. Just look at that waist!
21. Rita Ora – Met Gala 2024

Rita Ora decided to get creative at the 2024 Met Gala and wore what she called a necklace. In fact, the dress simply hung over her shoulders covering her front and back, but leaving the sides exposed—and exposed she was! Created from unique antique glass beads, this look was a fascinating way to “reawaken” fashion, as the theme suggested. Ora looks stunning with a simple makeup look—letting her outfit do the talking.
22. Katy Perry - Met Gala, 2019

Taking the Camp theme seriously, Katy Perry showed up ready to light up the 2019 Met Gala—and not just figuratively. She showed up as a literal chandelier. With three layers of candles and a headpiece weighing over 40 pounds, Jeremy Scott designed this show-stopping look for the show-stopping star. After taking six weeks to hang every individual crystal and piece on the dress, Perry rocked the dress and the theme. We’re sure she didn’t mind not being able to sit down.
23. Zendaya – Met Gala, 2018

Over the past few years, Zendaya has really come into her own in terms of her style and fashion. She seems to be breaking even more rules and breaking boundaries with what she wears, and we’re totally into it. For the 2018 Met Gala, she did just that when she donned this Versace ensemble. While we’d like to call it a gown, it seems as though this actress and singer was getting ready for battle instead of schmoozing with some of the biggest names in the celebrity world. The chain-mail piece made a statement, and an epic one at that.
24. Rihanna and A$AP Rocky - Met Gala, 2021

In honor of the 2021 Met Gala theme, which focused on modern American fashion, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky pulled up to the gala a few hours late—but ready to impress. Rihanna wore a Balenciaga gown and a beanie decorated in crystals, while her boyfriend showed up in a colorful quilted blanket. The pair were definitely a sight to behold, and fans couldn’t get enough of their looks this year.
25. Katy Perry – Met Gala, 2017

Yes, Katy Perry made her mark once again. For her 2017 ensemble, Katy really didn’t shy away from the cameras. This bright red gown featured all kinds of textures and materials, including netting and jewel details. While the Maison Margiela gown itself certainly stood out from the crowd, it was her avant-garde headpiece that really stole the show. The transparent veil featured all kinds of additions, and a pop of red could also be seen underneath the wearable art. It was the kind of dress that stopped people in their tracks.
26. Winnie Harlow - Met Gala 2022

Winnie Harlow showed up to the 2022 Met Gala with style and grace in her Iris van Herpen designed dress. But this was no regular gown. Instead, Harlow’s dress took inspiration from a ballerina look but took it to the next level. With a ton of volume on the gown itself and an intricate and dramatic headpiece, this model stood out on the Met Gala carpet.
27. Kate Hudson – Golden Globe Awards, 2003

Kate Hudson’s style career has been a bit hit and miss, but there’s no doubt about the fact that everyone remembers her iconic Valentino gown from the 2003 Golden Globe Awards. This amazing dress showed off Kate’s more bohemian side, and she instantly made her way onto the “Best Dressed” lists. After all, she looked absolutely stunning in it. Everything from the low-cut strapless bodice to the flowing material and train looked quite spectacular on the red carpet, and we want this iconic gown for ourselves.
28. Fredick Robertson - Met Gala 2022

While most guests of the Met Gala are A-list celebrities, Fredick Robertson still wowed the guests despite his lesser-known status. The creative director of a Swedish hair care company, Robertson was honored to be invited—and absolutely showed up on theme. With a custom Iris van Herpen creation that allowed him to show off a love for the unique and all things fashion, Robertson really knew what he was doing for his first debut at a Met Gala.
29. Elizabeth Hurley – Four Weddings and a Funeral premiere, 1994

Everyone knows this dress? Although Elizabeth Hurley and Hugh Grant are sadly no longer an item, their relationship will always be remembered for the fact that these two were perfect for each other, and Elizabeth’s iconic pin dress. The English actress wore this Versace dress for the Four Weddings and a Funeral premiere in 1994, and it instantly took the world by storm. Everything from the low-cut neckline to the safety pin accents showed off her figure perfectly, and it’s since become the ultimate statement piece that people just can’t seem to forget.
30. Halle Berry – Academy Awards, 2002

While there are many people in this world who are considered to be fashion icons, Halle Berry has rarely topped that list. However, that doesn’t mean that she hasn’t made her style mark. In 2002, the actress made her way down the Academy Awards red carpet in this Elie Saab gown, and the world went wild. The sheer and embroidered bodice of this dress was revealing but not too revealing, and then couples up with a stunning form-fitting skirt that flowed along the red carpet behind her. It was certainly a look to remember.
31. Lady Gaga – Grammy Awards, 2010

Lady Gaga has always been the kind of woman to push boundaries with her fashion choices, and some of her most outrageous outfits have also become her most iconic. Take this one, for example. When this singing sensation attended the Grammy Awards in 2010, she allowed Armani Prive to design this out-there ensemble that certainly made sure that she could keep some of her personal space. Every aspect of this ensemble was wild, from the gown to the shoes, to the hair, and the accessory she held in her hand.
32. Hilary Swank – Academy Awards, 2005

Hilary Swank oozes glamour, and while she has donned some incredible outfits in the past, this is the one that truly fills us with nostalgia. Swank wore this blue Guy Laroche gown to the 2005 Academy Awards, and there’s no doubt about the fact that she turned heads in it. While this simply looked like a blue dress, there was so much more to it than that. The designer incorporated a high neck, a cinched-in waist, and even a low back that truly showed off her figure. Many see it as her best outfit to date.
33. Bjork – Academy Awards, 2001

Bjork has made no secret of the fact that she doesn’t like to follow the crowd, and while a large number of her outfits have been rather wacky, none have been quite as wacky as her Academy Awards outfit in 2001. Designed by Marjan Pejoski, Bjork’s dress was less of a dress and more like her very own swan-impersonation. Despite the fact that it took many by surprise and many people didn’t like the overall aesthetic, it’s since become an icon in the fashion world. After all, it’s hard to forget.
34. Angelina Jolie – Cannes Film Festival, 2008

While there’s no doubt about the fact that Angelina Jolie has worn amazing designs over the years, this dress sticks in many people’s minds when they think about the actress. This might have something to do with the fact that she was pregnant with Brad Pitt’s child at the time, or it might have something to do with the fact that she rocked this Max Azria Atelier dress with her bump in tow. The green gown made her look even more the blushing mother-to-be, and she looked absolutely stunning.
35. Cindy Crawford – Academy Awards, 1991

As one of the most famous actresses and models to ever walk this Earth, we don’t think that we have ever seen Cindy Crawford in anything short of fabulous. She’s always at the top of her style game, but this particular dress has gone down in history. When she attended the 1991 Academy Awards with first husband Richard Gere on her arm, she stole the show in this red Versace gown. The plunging neckline was enough to get tongues wagging, and her iconic hair was just as luscious as ever.
36. Michelle Williams – Academy Awards, 2006

Since making her debut in the early ‘90s, Michelle Williams has since become a huge name in the world of Hollywood. Her acting talent has reigned supreme, and that’s now what most people know her for. However, there’s no doubt about the fact that many people also know her for this Academy Awards gown. Michelle attended the 2006 event in this beautiful yellow Vera Wang gown, and she instantly became the talk of the red carpet. Many people have since tried to recreate this look, but none have even come close to this perfection.
37. Gwyneth Paltrow – Academy Awards, 1999

There are many dresses in this world that have gone down in history for various different reasons, and Gwyneth Paltrow’s 1999 Academy Awards dress has been met with criticism. While many have slated it for being ill-fitting and a bit too pink, that’s exactly what has made it iconic. Despite the fact that many people didn’t like what they saw, Gwyneth continued to rock the red carpet in her Ralph Lauren get-up, and she oozed confidence in the process. You just can’t put a price on confidence, after all.
38. Barbra Streisand – Academy Awards, 1969

Red carpet outfits become iconic for all kinds of reasons, and most people probably didn’t expect Barbra Streisand to stand out from the crowd at the Academy Awards. As someone who has normally kept within the normal lines of fashion, Barbra decided to stick her toe outside of this box for this event. She donned this Arnold Scaasi number, which featured sheer fabric that left little to the imagination. It was both prim and proper and scandalous at the same time, and it made fans love her even more.
39. Jennifer Aniston – Cannes Film Festival, 2004

It seems as though Brad Pitt just loves to stand next to women as they don some of their most famous outfits, because he did the same thing in 2004. While walking the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival with Brad, Jennifer Aniston wore this stunning Valentino gown. Laden with beads, this shimmering halter dress showed off her figure and her slender frame perfectly. It also showed off her hair, which has since become one of her most famous assets. With matching jewels, she became a shining beacon of luxury.
40. Julia Roberts – Academy Awards, 2001

With her dazzling smile and her sleek hair, it’s no secret that Julia Roberts doesn’t need to wear the fanciest outfits to show off her beauty. However, that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t like to dress up every now and then! While attending the Academy Awards in 2001, Julia donned a black and white Valentino gown that rocked the red carpet. While her actress niece Emma Roberts has since given this dress the nickname of “skunk dress,” she certainly looks like the most beautiful skunk we’ve ever seen.
41. Madonna – MTV Video Music Awards, 1984

If you’re a fan of Madonna, you’ll know that she has worn some pretty outlandish outfits over the years. In fact, that’s just part of her brand. She longs to break out of the mainstream fashion culture, and she has done that with an awesome designer by her side. Maripol has designed many of her outfits in the past, and this designer even created this dress for the 1984 MTV Video Music Awards. This wedding-like gown came complete with iconic accents, such as her “Boy Toy” belt and her iconic fingerless gloves.
42. Kim Kardashian – Met Gala, 2013

Kim Kardashian has worn some incredibly iconic outfits over the course of her career, and this is certainly one of them. Kim donned this Givenchy gown to the Met Gala in 2013, but she certainly wasn’t feeling like her usual self on the night. Heavily pregnant with her first child, North West, at the time, Kim had to work her outfit around her large baby bump. She has since noted that she hated what she was wearing, but there’s no doubt about the fact that her floral gown with matching gloves has since been parodied on countless occasions.
43. Sienna Miller – Academy Awards, 2004

Sienna Miller is a huge name in the acting world, but she’s never really been congratulated for her place in the fashion world. While she has normally impressed everyone with her outfits, it’s no secret that her Matthew Williamson gown in 2004 really stole the show. She wore this dress for the Academy Awards event, and the green ensemble was unlike anything else on the red carpet. It was both stylish and different at the same time, and her matching gold accessories just elevated the outfit even more. What’s not to love?
44. Jennifer Lopez – CFDA Awards, 1998

Jennifer Lopez has always been on top of her style game, and she has certainly changed up her style over the years. She has flitted between chic athleisure to red carpet ready ball gowns, and this was one of her most iconic. J-Lo wore this Randolph Duke sheer dress to the CFDA Awards in 1998, and there’s no doubt about the fact that it got tongues wagging. While it looked a little transparent, this was a trick of the light and all thanks to the material used by the designer. Because of this, it certainly made a statement.
45. Nicole Kidman – Academy Awards, 2004

Nicole Kidman has been in the limelight for decades, and since then, she has made a name for herself as a stylish cookie. She has never been afraid to try new styles and wear clothes that are a little more out-there, and this regularly pays off. In 2004, Nicole swanned down the red carpet at the Academy Awards in this Chanel Couture gown – and we bet she felt pretty fabulous. The icy-blue number featured jewels and ruffles and fit her perfectly in the process. It definitely stole the show.
46. Sharon Stone – Academy Awards, 1998

While many red carpet dresses have gone down a storm, there are others that have been a little more controversial – like Sharon Stone’s ensemble at the 1988 Academy Awards. Most celebrities dress up as luxuriously as possible when they head to this event every year, which is why Sharon seemed to create an anticlimax. While many were expecting something big and something that would wow those at home, she instead broke the red carpet rules. Yes, for this event, she donned a Vera Wang skirt with a white shirt she bought herself from Gap…
47. Lady Gaga – MTV Video Music Awards, 2010

It’s no secret that Lady Gaga has worn some seriously strange and controversial outfits over the years. However, the “Meat Dress” she wore to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards is perhaps the most controversial of all. While most people assumed that this dress was made from fake meat, it was actually created using a huge amount of raw flank steak. The whole idea was designed and conceptualized by Franc Fernandez, who probably didn’t think about the backlash that would amount from animal rights groups. We bet it smelled awful, too.
48. Katy Perry – Met Gala, 2015

We’ve already seen that Katy Perry loves to go big or go home when it comes to her Met Gala outfit, but we have a feeling that some people wish she had actually gone home in 2015. For this event, Katy wore a design by Jeremy Scott for Moschino – but it seems as though the designs weren’t exactly original. The singer and the designer came under fire when a Brooklyn street artist filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against them. According to Rime, Jeremy Scott used his signature graffiti tag for the gown without permission.
49. Madonna – Grammy Awards, 2015

Madonna has worn some outrageous outfits in the past, and there’s no doubt about the fact that most people have congratulated her for thinking outside of the box. However, her look at the 2015 Grammy Awards left people less than impressed. Madge wore a Givenchy ensemble for this red carpet event, and people didn’t really know what to make of this bull-fighting chic look. Featuring a tight corset, fishnet tights, fingerless gloves, and a strange hat, many wondered whether she was perhaps too old to pull off such a look.
50. Nicki Minaj – Grammy Awards, 2011

Nicki Minaj is known for pushing the boat out, not only in terms of her clothing but also in terms of her wigs and weaves. She decided to do just that in 2011 when she walked the Grammy Awards red carpet – but it seems as though some people just couldn’t get behind this Givenchy Couture look. Many wondered whether she had gone overboard with the animal print, but it seems as though Nicki was feeling herself on the night. At least she was coordinated because every inch of her is covered in animal print!
51. Nicki Minaj – Grammy Awards, 2012

However, it seems as though Nicki wanted to make even more of a statement the next year. By the time the 2012 Grammy Awards came around, this singer and rapper went with an entirely different look. Instead of rocking the animal print, she rocked her habit-like cloak dress instead. While the Versace ensemble was supposedly an homage to Madonna, many people were offended rather than impressed. They believed her own outfit to be sacrilegious, and that’s before they got onto the fact that she brought along a date dressed as the Pope.
52. Celine Dion – Academy Awards, 1999

Celine Dion has always been a fashion icon, and she hasn’t been afraid to try something new – even if it doesn’t quite work. She did just that at the 1999 Academy Awards when she wore this white Galliano pantsuit. Rather than wearing it the way that it was designed, Celine decided to mix things up and wear it backward instead. This meant that she was left with a plain front section, while the buttons and the lapels could be seen on the back. Fans just didn’t quite understand her fashion decision on this occasion.
53. Christina Aguilera – 7th Annual Blockbuster Entertainment Awards, 2001

Christina Aguilera has often been celebrated for her racy outfits and her ability to show off some skin while still looking fabulous, but what do you think of this ensemble? When Christina made her way down the red carpet at the 7th Annual Blockbuster Entertainment Awards in 2001, people weren’t sure. The velour dress with some rather deep cut-outs just didn’t seem to compliment her giant hair, and certainly not with those shoes. Maybe that’s why she reserved this outfit for a Blockbuster event, in the hope that it would fade into oblivion…
54. Anne Hathaway – Academy Awards, 2013

Incredible red carpet looks don’t just work in favor of the celebrity wearing the outfit, because this also works in favor of the designer behind the ensemble. Unfortunately, Anne Hathaway got on the wrong side of Valentino when she made her way to the 2013 Academy Awards. The actress was originally booked to wear one of their designs for the red carpet, but when she realized that her Les Miserables co-star, Amanda Seyfried, was wearing a similar gown, she swapped at the last minute to this Prada dress. Valentino wasn’t aware of this swap and wasn’t impressed.
55. Angelina Jolie – Academy Awards, 2012

Angelina Jolie has worn some incredible outfits over the years, but she’s rarely been the kind of woman to show off her assets of show off a lot of skin. Because of this, the dress that she wore to the 2012 Academy Awards certainly raised a few eyebrows. While the Atelier Versace gown impressed fans with its design and its material from a certain angle, Angelina made sure to stick her leg through the slit in the gown for photos. This seemed very out of character for the actress, and many didn’t know what to make of it.
56. Lady Gaga – Grammy Awards, 2011

Although Lady Gaga often uses the help of artists and designers for her performances and her red carpet events, she sometimes likes to put her own input into the final design. That’s exactly what happened when Gaga attended and performed at the Grammy Awards in 2011. Not only did she arrive in an egg that she then hatched out of on stage, but she also designed the costumes those carrying her wore. What’s even stranger about this situation is the fact that she was in this temperature-controlled egg for a whopping three days.
57. Uma Thurman – Academy Awards, 2004

Fashion is subjective, but it’s fair to say that most people can agree when something falls short of the fashion mark. This was the case for Uma Thurman’s outfit to the 2004 Academy Awards. Dressed in a Christian Lacroix gown, it featured all kinds of lace, embellishments, and numerous forms of layering. The whole thing was finished off with a blue belt – and people weren’t convinced. She quickly made her way onto the “Worst Dressed” lists, and many thought that the whole thing just missed the luxury mark expected of a red carpet event.
58. Faith Hill – Academy Awards, 2002

Faith Hill may be one of the most famous names in the world of country music, but it seems as though her Nashville style falls short of what’s expected in the world of Hollywood. While this singer probably wants people to forget her controversial Academy Awards outfit in 2002, the internet never forgets. Her Versace gown stood out from the crowd when she walked down the red carpet on this occasion, but this wasn’t for the right reasons. This rainbow-inspired dress just didn’t sit well with fashion experts or those at home.
59. Geena Davis – Academy Awards, 1992

In the early ‘90s, Geena Davis was at the height of her career. While many expected her to turn up to the Academy Award ceremony in 1992 in a sleek and luxurious gown, the opposite happened. The actress instead donned a dress designed by Ruth Meyers and Bill Hargate that was short and the front and long at the back. As if that wasn’t enough, there was a lot of ruffles and pink gloves to contend with. The whole thing shook many fans to the core, and they couldn’t believe what they were seeing.
60. Charlize Theron – Academy Awards, 2010

Charlize Theron is a huge name in the acting world, and she has been able to forge a reputation for herself over the years as a style icon, as well. While there was no doubt about the fact that the Dior gown she wore for the 2010 Academy Awards was stunning, there was something about it that stood out from the crowd. Many people couldn’t help but notice that their attention was being drawn to a certain area of her body, and they wondered whether she realized this before she got ready for the evening.
61. Gigi Hadid – Met Gala, 2019

Fashion is all about pushing boundaries and trying something new, but there are often times when people believe this innovation has gone too far. That’s certainly what the general consensus was about Gigi Hadid’s 2019 Met Gala outfit. Dripping in silver, gold, and a whole load of feathers, Gigi certainly turned heads in this Michael Kors ensemble when she made her way down the red – or pink – carpet. They wondered where her hands had disappeared to, and they couldn’t help but think that the silver eye accents were a bit too much. It certainly caused a ruckus.
62. Miley Cyrus – MTV Video Music Awards, 2015

When it comes to uncomfortable red carpet dresses, Miley Cyrus certainly knows more than most. She regularly walks onto the red carpet wearing outfits that most of us wouldn’t even dream of wearing, and this MTV Video Music Awards outfit in 2015 is one of them. For this event, Cyrus wore a pink latex mini-dress complete with giant balloon attachments. While the latex in itself probably wasn’t comfortable, we can’t imagine the prospect of popping balloons was too comfortable either. It would also ruin the whole aesthetic if one of the letters did pop…
63. Z LaLa – Billboard Music Awards, 2016

If you’re familiar with Z LaLa, you’ll know that this singer-songwriter doesn’t like to play by the rules. She regularly takes to the red carpet in weird and wonderful designs, and she wore this particular one to the 2016 Billboard Music Awards. As if the giant headpiece and the tight bodice weren’t enough to make Z LaLa super uncomfortable, it seems as though the large cage around her would certainly do the trick. Let’s hope that guests were able to stand at this award ceremony because we have a feeling that this singer wouldn’t be able to sit down in such an outfit.
64. Lady Gaga – Brit Awards, 2010

Yes, Lady Gaga has made another appearance on this list. We probably could have added all of her outfit choices to the list of the most uncomfortable red carpet dresses, but this seemed like the most uncomfortable of them all. Gaga donned this weird and wacky ensemble to the 2010 Brit Awards, and the Francesco Scognamiglio design certainly went down a storm. As if the giant wig wasn’t enough to make Gaga feel as though she was weighed down, we have a feeling that this huge amount of material probably did it for her.
65. Solange Knowles – Met Gala, 2016

Solange is the kind of recording artist that loves to add an artistic flair to her outfit, and she certainly did that when she attended the Met Gala in 2016. With a love of circular shapes, Solange decided to go ahead and wear this David Laport gown – complete with yellow latex stockings! While it doesn’t look as though the material is too rough or hard, we can’t imagine it’s easy to walk around a crowded gala with giant circles sticking out of your body from all different angles. It is a great way to maintain your personal space, however.
66. Beyonce – Met Gala, 2016

The same year as her sister rocked a large ensemble that branched off into the crowd, Beyonce decided to go in a different direction. She instead decided to keep her Givenchy design pretty close to her chest – although some would say she kept it a little too close to her chest. This latex dress looks as though it has cut off Queen Bey’s circulation, and it’s fair to say that she doesn’t look too comfortable. That smile on her face suggests that it may be too tight, and one wrong move could see a rip that nobody wants to endure.
67. Julie Macklowe – Met Gala, 2016

Known for her role in the beauty world, businesswoman Julie Macklowe has proved to everyone that she has what it takes to also be a fashion icon. While she’s no stranger to trying out new styles and really pushing the boat out with her designs, some of them have looked a little uncomfortable. Like this one, for example. Julie attended the 2016 Met Gala wearing this mosaic metal ensemble. While it certainly looks cool and stylish, we can’t help but wonder how much all of that weighed. We bet she needed a rest by the end of the night.
68. Lady Gaga – A Star Is Born premiere, 2018

While Lady Gaga has proved to the world that she has what it takes to dominate the music industry, her career took a different turn in 2018 when she turned to acting. While attending the premiere of A Star is Born, Gaga celebrated her successes in this Alexander McQueen gown. This dress seemed to be inspired by history, but it also seemed to be inspired by those who have injured their neck. This neck cuff looked to be a little too high for Gaga to endure, and she looked uncomfortable for the whole night.
69. Sarah Jessica Parker – Met Gala, 2015

Sarah Jessica Parker has always broken boundaries when it comes to her fashion, and this Met Gala ensemble certainly proved that. Her 2015 outfit of choice came in the form of this colorful array of textures and patterns – and would you believe that she designed it herself! While the dress itself didn’t look too uncomfortable, it was the Philip Treacy headpiece that really hit the nail on the head. It looked as though one wrong move would see it toppling to the ground, and it also looked extremely heavy. She rocked it, though.
70. Girl Crush – Grammy Awards, 2017

When you think of Girl Crush, you might immediately think of the iconic country song, but that’s not all this name is famous for. That’s because Girl Crush is also a singer, whose biggest claim to fame came in the form of a baublelicious outfit she wore to the 2017 Grammy Awards. The blonde bombshell looked like the ultimate Barbie when she made her way down the red carpet, but we can’t imagine that this unique outfit was very comfortable. After all, how do you even sit down in this thing?
71. Grace Jones – Cannes Film Festival, 2001

Grace Jones is the kind of woman who has oodles of talent under her belt. Not only is she a model, but she’s also a singer, songwriter, and actress. Well, it seems as though she also has the ability to wear some seriously uncomfortable outfits. She did just that in 2001 when she attended the Cannes Film Festival. For this occasion, Grace donned some rather simple black pants, but then paired it with a large star-shaped top. Whether this was a sweater or a T-shirt, we don’t know, but it was certainly strange.
72. Rihanna – American Music Awards, 2008

If you have ever worn leather or chains, you’ll know that both of them are pretty uncomfortable. However, that didn’t stop Rihanna from wearing both of them when she attended the American Music Awards in 2008. Ri-Ri looked pretty happy with herself when she walked away with her awards in her hand, but we can’t help but wonder if that smile was forced a little bit. After all, she has leather digging into her chest, she has leather pants stuck to her legs, and she has chains weighing her down.
73. Britney Spears – American Music Awards, 2001

Who could possibly forget this iconic look? Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake stopped their fans in their tracks when they debuted their double-denim at the American Music Awards. While we can understand why their incredible outfits have since gone down in history, we have to be a little more practical about this. Denim is an extremely heavy and hot material, and most people can’t wear it for more than a few hours at a time. So, we can’t even imagine how hot these ensembles must have been on the night.
74. Zendaya – Teen Vogue’s Young Hollywood Party, 2014

Zendaya may be young, but what she lacks in age, she has seriously made up for in terms of her courage – especially when it comes to her style. She has experimented with various different looks over the years, and this was something she debuted at the 2014 Teen Vogue’s Young Hollywood Party. Reminiscent of Pharrell and his love for hats, Zendaya also wore this Emporio Armani wide-leg jumpsuit. That looks pretty comfortable, but how heavy was that hat? We wonder how long she lasted before she had to take it off.
75. Z LaLa – American Music Awards, 2015

We’ve already seen that Z LaLa likes to go hard or go home when it comes to her red carpet outfits, but it seems as though she is the gift that just keeps on giving. At the 2015 American Music Awards, this singer decided to go seriously hard with her ensemble, and she became an octopus for the evening. Everything from her hair to her dress and her nails were kitted out to resemble the sea creature, and there’s no doubt about the fact that she turned heads. Last time we checked, it’s pretty hard to walk with an octopus attached to you, though.
76. Katy Perry – amfAR Gala, 2016

You can normally tell by the expression on someone’s face whether they are comfortable or not, and there’s no doubt about the fact that Katy Perry was not comfortable at the 2016 amfAR Gala. While her dress was absolutely stunning and something we would love to wear, it didn’t seem like the most practical. Not only was it skin-tight around the top half of her body, but it also featured some giant sleeves that were adorned with even larger petals. Sure, it looked aesthetically pleasing, but how do you move your arms with those things?
77. Lady Gaga – Grammy Awards, 2016

Lady Gaga has worn all kinds of uncomfortable outfits over the years, but sometimes it’s just one aspect of the outfit that really takes us by surprise. At the 2016 Grammy Awards, the incredible singer donned this royal blue coat dress that featured all kinds of glittery embellishments. However, the Met Gala in 2016 was a whole different story. For this event, Nicki donned an outfit that really did raise eyebrows. While the low-cut aspect was something that most people could cope with, it was the ties and the belt aspects that really had people shocked. Were her arms strapped down? How on earth would she get on with that?
79. Kim Kardashian – Met Gala, 2016

When it comes to making a statement, Kim Kardashian is your girl. She’s no stranger to the idea that “Beauty is pain,” but that doesn’t mean it isn’t uncomfortable for everyone else. For the 2016 Met Gala, Kim made fans wince with her stunning outfit. At least we know that she made it out of this dress alive.
80. Kendall Jenner – MTV Movie Awards

With her model physique and her beautiful face, Kendall Jenner is no stranger to showing off what her momager gave her. She has been doing just that since she first made her celebrity debut, and it became extremely apparent at the MTV Movie Awards in 2016. While her black dress was floaty and feminine, it was her shoes that really caught us off guard. Celebs are known for wearing high heels as it is, but this particular pair took that to the extreme. As if that wasn’t enough, you couldn’t just whip these off in a hurry.
81. Rihanna – Met Gala, 2016

Rihanna has appeared on this dress more times than we can count, but it seems as though she just can’t get enough of wearing uncomfortable dresses for the sake of fashion. Her Academy Awards ensemble was laden with pearls and beads, and the capped shoulders looked beautiful on her slender frame.
