It's a sad day for the world of music, and for the genre of hip hop. Dwight Arrington, better known as Heavy D, died today after being sent to the hospital around 12pm PST. By 1pm, he had been pronounced dead, at only 44 years of age. For most of the day, there was no news about the cause of death, although sources like TMZ were speculating that the rapper had a heart attack. Now it's being reported that he died of pneumonia. When EMTs arrived at Heavy D's home, he was conscious and able to talk, but he was having trouble breathing.

Heavy D was really a renaissance man. In addition to being a highly talented rapper who helped revolutionize hip hop in the 1990s, he acted, sang, and produced records for other artists. He's best known as the front man for Heavy D and the Boys. What's really sad is that, this past October, he performed at the BET Awards. It was the first time he performed live in 15 years.

He spent a lot of time on TV, making appearances in shows like Bones, Tyler Perry's House of Payne, and Law and Order: SVU. He also had a notably fantastic role in The Cider House Rules, with Tobey Maguire and Charlize Theron.

One of his best known songs was “Now That We Found Love.”

There's no question he'll be missed. RIP, Heavy D.

Did you enjoy his work, either as a performer, an actor, or a producer? What are some of your favorite songs, shows, or performances?
