Eclectic chic is what comes to mind after taking in the latest collection by New Zealand native, Karen Walker. As I watched the models strut down the runway in a combination of pristine cream pintuck dresses, “shabby chic”-looking red floral print tops, rock-inspired graphic tees, and acid-wash velvet pants, the collection seemed to lack cohesiveness, but still somehow madsense. Maybe that’s because I could picture all of the garments hanging in the closet of the same, confident, “I don’t care what people think,” type of fashion chameleon….a la Sienna Miller.
Even though I was a bit confused initially, half way through, I found the collection to be really refreshing and different. A combination of the simple white set, the models’ low-key hair and makeup, and the unpretentious and whimsical clothing, were a nice change of pace from all of the pageantry happening in the tents.

Possible trend alerts for AW08: ** Crocheted accessories (hats, bags, and jewelry), tangerine being a hot colour, the return of acid wash (eek no!), and the continuation of tights and leggings (but tucked into colourful socks?!)
For all you New Yorkers, Den (330 East 11th Street) is showcasing and selling Karen Walker’s Spring collection for a limited time. Might be worth a peek.
