Napping in NYC ...

By Mary

In the midst of a very busy shopping day, have you ever just hit a sinker? You’re energy sags, everything takes more effort than it should, and nothing seems very interesting? Well, if you’re in Manhattan, **Yelo** can provide you with a quick pick-me-up.

So what is Yelo? It’s a wellness concept that includes reflexology treatments and a power nap sleep therapy. Of course, a power nap is not going to be a long-term substitute for proper nutrition and good sleep habits, but it can leave you refreshed in the middle of a hectic or stressful day.

Here’s how it works: You enter your private YeloCab (short for cabin) and recline in a special chair that elevates your legs above your heart. The chair comes with 500-thread count linens and a soft cashmere blanket, making it very comfy. The YeloCab itself is personalized, based on your preferences for light and sound, your preference (or not) for aroma therapy, and the duration you’ve selected for your nap. Naps run 20-40 minutes in length (in five minute increments). Less than 20 minutes and you won’t get enough rest; more than 20 minutes encouraged deep REM sleep that will leave you groggy.

I was intrigued. But with no plans to visit NYC in the near future, I asked a trusted co-worker to check it out. Here’s what else she reported back about the experience:

She booked a 30-minute nap appointment at the Yelo website, paying for it when she arrived. (Yelo reports that you will soon be able to book your appointment and pay online.) At arrival, her questions were answered, and she was promptly shown into her YeloCab.

And then. . . . well, this is what I really wanted to know. Did she go to sleep?

Yes, she did. She remembers getting all cozy and comfortable under the blanket, and just sort of nodding off. She was gradually woken by a simulated sunrise, as the chair returned to an upright position. She said that she felt comfortably rested, and ready to resume her day. It wasn’t magically curative of all that ailed her, but it a lovely break in the day — much more so than stopping for a cup of coffee or a glass of wine.

YeloNaps are available in five-minute increments from 20-40 minutes, priced from $12-$24. There is a strict no tipping policy. Yelo also offers a variety of reflexology treatments.

Yelo is located at 315 West 57th Street (between 8th & 9th Avenue). Hours are Monday - Friday, 10 am - 9 pm; Saturday, noon - 8 pm, and Sunday, noon - 7 pm.

If you’ve taken a YeloNap, I’d love to hear about your experience.
