Judd Apatow has followed up his surprise hit, “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” with another ingratiating romantic comedy that might have been called “The 23-Year-Old Accidental Dad.”
The real title, “Knocked Up,” is a punchier summary of this gender-divide film about the aftermath of a one-night stand between an ambitious, gorgeous blonde named Alison and Ben, a slovenly slacker. Like “The 40-Year-Old-Virgin,” it successfully mixes raunchy humor and juvenile antics with tender touches and adult conflicts.
Writer/director Apatow gives us jokes about masturbation and buying condoms from Costco, yet we also get sweet moments such as the one where penniless Ben (Seth Rogan) gets down on his knee and proposes to Alison (Katherine Heigl) with an empty ring case. You’d expect the mood shifts to be more jolting than they are; Apatow has a knack for melding the light and the serious, and treating them with equal respect. **More on this review…**
I have to admit this is one I just can’t wait to see. It sounds as though it has the ability to deliver just enough sweetness to endear any woman, while tossing in just enough rauchy to entertain any man.
Anyone seen it yet?
