What Is A Hand-Knotted Rug?

In essence, the rug is exactly what its name suggests, a rug where every knot has been done by hand. There are hundreds, or sometimes thousands of knots in any rug. The average mass-produced rug has knots completed by a machine. But, if you want authenticity and to feel a part of history, choose a hand-knotted rug.

They are made by skilled weavers using traditional skills and there is nothing else quite like them in the world.

Of course, if you make this type of investment you’ll want to keep your hand-knotted rug looking like brand new.

2

Rotation

The first thing to note is that all rugs, and especially hand-knotted ones, need to be rotated regularly. It’s best to rotate them 90° every 3-4 months. This will even out any wear caused by the sun’s rays. Of course, it won’t prevent the damage from happening but it will ensure the wear is even, helping to keep the rug looking its best.

3

Use A Rug Pad

The rug pad is designed to help protect your rug and it will help decrease the amount of shedding. Naturally, a hand-knotted rug will shed significantly in the first few weeks. This will slow and stop within a month or so.

4

The Right Size

If you want your hand-knotted rug to look great in the future you need to choose the right size today. That means one that fills a large portion of your room or focuses your eyes on a specific state. If you try to save money by choosing a smaller rug than the space calls for, it’s likely to look out of place.

5

Maintenance

Every hand-knotted rug comes with instructions regarding how to look after it and help it to look its best for life. It’s important to read these and follow the instructions.

The general practice is to use a vacuum with a suction attachment and not too much power. You don’t want to undo the handmade knots. Alongside this, you should avoid using a beater brush and the edges of your rug. This will cause damage and shorten its lifespan. In fact, dusting can be an effective way to remove the dirt and debris that sinks into the piles of the rug.

If you need to clean spills and liquids from your hand-knotted rug you should blot first, effectively removing any excess fluid. You can then use warm soapy water and a clean cloth to gently encourage the rest of the liquid out and prevent a stain from developing.

It’s important not to use cleaning agents as these can change the colour of the material.  It can also be a good idea to have it professional cleaned at least once a year.
