Fashion Week 101 What Does a Dresser do?

Fashion shows aren't all glitz and glamour. There's a lot of work that goes into making fashion week so - well - fashioniable. And there's a bevy of backstage busy bees that turn Bryant Park into the most stylish spot in NYC. Securities guards, publicists, makeup artists, construction workers, hair stylists, photographers, DJs and dressers. They perform the real magic. They give us the tickets, keep out the "riff-raff" and make the models' makeup chic. Glam thought we'd shine our spotlight on some of these hardworking beind-the-scenes ladies and gents. Afterall, without them, Fashion Week would just a bunch of skinny people in cool clothes, sans runway, sans tents.... sans audience!

Here, Glam chats with a dresser at the Miss Sixty Fashion Show!

Glam: What's your name:

My name is Julia Levo.

Glam: How did you get involved with this?

Um. I've been an actress for years and there's always been a bunch of quick changes backstage; whether it's yourself or with other people. And i just know a lot of people who have done this.

Glam: So, you've done this before in the past?

Yes. I've been working for about five years.

Glam: What other shows are you doing this week?

Um. Carolina Hererra, Reem Acra, Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein, Narciso Rodriguez...

Glam: So, what is it that you do?

Dress the girls. We go through the garments and we make sure we know exactly how each piece fits, because it's all very quick. And we make sure the shoes are fitted so they don't slip on the bottom... Just look for anything loose or that doesn't fit properly.

Glam: How far in advance to the show do you start?

About two hours beforehand.

Glam: Do you meet the models in advance?

No, we usually meet the models as they are getting their first looks.

Glam: What's the most exciting part about this job?

Just making sure all the clothes get on the model at the right time so they - you know - will present the clothes well.

Glam: Has anything ever gone really wrong where the models haven't gotten dressed in time?

Oh sure! All sorts of stuff.

Glam: Any one particular story that sticks out in your mind?

Um, no. not really. I mean, there are some, but i don't think i really want to talk about them!
