8 Ways to Support Animal Welfare ...

Animal welfare is a cause dear to my heart. I believe that we have a responsibility towards them, and hate to think of any animal suffering. Sometimes it’s difficult to know where to start, though, if you want to do your bit, so here are some ways in which you can help animal welfare.

1 Go Vegetarian

I’ve been vegetarian for around 20 years, and it really is a great way to suport animal welfare. I don’t believe in being preachy, though, as everyone has to make up their own mind. So if you don’t want to be fully vegetarian or vegan, why not try a few meat-free meals every week? It’s tasty and cheap!

Frequently asked questions

2 Buy Humane Meat

If you’re not ready or keen on going properly vegetarian, then buy meat that has been humanely reared and killed. For your own health, as well, it’s better to eat meat of higher quality, even if it means buying it less often.

3 Cruelty-Free Cosmetics

I switched to these before I turned vegetarian, as I found it hard to justify buying unnecessary products that caused pain to animals. These days, there is a vast range of quality cosmetics that are cruelty-free, so it’s even easier to look good with a clear conscience.

4 Campaigning

If there’s an issue regarding animal welfare that you feel strongly about, get involved in campaigning (peacefully, of course). Things change when people get proactive – look at the imminent end of bullfighting in Catalunya. You too can make a difference – nothing changes if people don’t make their voices heard.

5 Fundraising

There are so many animal charities that desperately need funds, especially small local groups. Raising funds for them will be so useful and appreciated, and help them to help animals. Food, vet bills and other expenses all add up to a LOT of money.

6 Volunteering

There are so many ways in which you can help animals as a volunteer. Fundraising, as mentioned above, helping in a shelter, fostering, walking a dog, dealing with adoptions … there is sure to be a way in which your time and talents can be used!

7 Boycott

If you object to the way in which a company is perpetuating animal cruelty, then write and tell them so. Simply stopping buying their products or services isn’t enough, as they won’t know why. You may think your opinion won’t count, but companies have to listen to their customers, and if enough people complain, the message will get across.

8 Free-Range Eggs

I always used to buy these in the UK, but they’re harder to find in Spain. I have decided though that I can’t continue buying battery eggs, so I’m going to look for a supplier of free-range eggs.

I hope that these ideas inspire you to discover ways to help animals. Not everyone will want to take all of these steps, but whatever you do will help.
