When I was little, my parents told me coffee would stunt my growth. Today, coffee is the center of most adult gatherings. There are a few tea drinkers in the family, but they will also share a cup of Joe with the rest of us when tea isn’t available. Coffee with caffeine has been made out to be a beverage that should be consumed in moderation, but here are 8 reasons to drink more coffee. I can only drink so much coffee in a day, however, these reasons made me a lot less leery of taking just one more cup to go.

Gallbladder function is stimulated by the caffeine in coffee, thus reducing the risk of gallstones developing. Cirrhosis of the liver occurs less in people who are heavy drinkers of coffee. There is a certain enzyme that builds up in the liver that causes the liver to deteriorate. Caffeinated coffee is one key to keeping these enzyme numbers low.

This neurological disorder affects quite a few people in their elderly years. A loss of neurons is what causes Parkinson’s, but coffee, tea, and other beverages with caffeine can reduce the amount of neurons lost. Some symptoms of this disease can begin appearing by the age of 50. The risk of having this disease increases with age and genetics also have a lot to do with it.

Studies have shown that the chlorogenic acid and caffeine in coffee are helpful in lowering the risk of liver cancer in people who drink lots of coffee. A Japanese study showed that coffee was also effective in reducing the risk of endometrial cancer in women. Who would have ever thought coffee to be a cancer-reducing substance?

Jet lag occurs when the body’s normal rhythms become thrown out of whack. The body can usually sense when it’s time to sleep and wake up, but traveling long distances on planes seems to throw all of this out of sync. A big cup of coffee is just the thing for keeping you awake those extra hours to help you adjust to a new time schedule. It not only provides you with a bit of a boost, but coffee can also supply the body with some extra hydration. Long journeys are known for making people very dehydrated.

Who hasn’t been driving all night and stopped by a gas station for the largest cup of coffee available? Most people are aware of how helpful convenient store java is for keeping them awake during a lengthy drive. It also works if you are the one who is supposed to be talking to the driver and helping him/her stay awake as well. The more coffee I drink, the chattier I get, so I’m an excellent co-pilot, when it comes to keeping the driver entertained with conversation.

Drinking many cups of coffee each day has actually been shown to reduce the onset of type II diabetes. This disease tends to affect people later on in life and is the type of diabetes the majority of the world’s population is afflicted with. Studies that were performed on the association with coffee and a reduction on type II diabetes showed that the chlorogenic acid was the risk-reducing factor, not the caffeine. Due to this find, even decaffeinated coffee drinkers are protecting themselves against type II diabetes.

College students cramming for exams know that the caffeine in coffee is a great brain booster. Many nights of studying during my college years took place at a restaurant that was open all night long. This restaurant catered to the many college students that thrived on the bottomless cup of coffee.

There was a study that took place in Sweden over a span of 20 years. The test subjects were followed for two decades and their coffee consumption was monitored during this time. Those who drank up to 5 cups of coffee each day lowered their risk by 65 percent for both the development of dementia and Alzheimer’s.
The many studies performed on coffee drinkers can be found online, which is where I came up with most of these 8 reasons to drink more coffee. My grandmother drinks an entire pot of coffee daily and is the strongest, healthiest 87 year old woman I’ve ever seen. Are you a big coffee drinker or have you been scared off of coffee by past articles claiming that coffee was a bad thing?
