7 Tips on Overcoming Indecisiveness ...

By Sofi

If you’re like me, decision making is a tough process. It always involves weighing up all the options, analysing things to the Nth degree, and going through all the worst-case scenarios. Each option has its pros and I flip-flop between them all. It can all turn into a very lengthy process. So here are a few tips I keep in mind for when I need to overcome my indecisiveness.

1. Go with Your Gut Instinct

This is probably the most obvious and common tip, but that’s because it works. Sometimes it may take a bit of practice, especially if you are used to overanalysing and thinking through every little detail. Start small and practice with things like making a rushed decision when you’re at a restaurant or what check out aisle to go to at the supermarket. You’ll be perfecting the art of snap decision making in no time!

2. Always Have a Back-up Plan

If you make a decision, and it turns out to be the wrong one, it’s always handy to have a Plan B. This isn’t a sign of lacking confidence in your decision making skills, it’s just being prepared. Usually when things go pear-shaped, we have to mend the damage quickly. Don’t dwell on where you went wrong, instead focus on what you can do right next time.

3. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Advice

Sometimes all we need is a second opinion before we can feel comfortable in our choices. It’s OK to ask a close friend or family member for advice. Remember to choose wisely though. As long as they are honest in their opinions, and don’t have ulterior motives, their influence may just be the push you need.

4. Sleep on It

If it can wait, why not give it time and sleep on it? A good night’s sleep and a fresh outlook on things can work wonders. New ideas will pop into mind and maybe other alternatives will appear right in front of your eyes. This extra time to think things through is sometimes all the clarification you need.

5. Imagine the Consequences

Projected outcomes are a wonderful thing. Place yourself in the future and imagine just what impact each of your choices will lead to. Best and worst case scenarios please. What could and couldn’t you live with? Weigh up the risks and choose the option that you are most at ease with.

6. Flip a Coin

If it’s a one-or-the-other kind of choice, flipping a coin is a fast and easy fix. Option A is heads and Option B is tails. If you are happy with the result, then take comfort in knowing that you are making the right decision. If the result was not what you were after, then you know that the other one was what you wanted all along. See, it’s not such a frivolous decision making process after all.

7. Fake It Till You Make It

If you’re not confident in your decision making skills just yet, fake it! Make decisions with conviction. Get in the mindset that every decision you make is the right one. Practice on the small things. Before you know it, pretending to be confident may soon turn into a genuine ability to make good decisions.

These are only seven of my top tips. If you have any more, please feel free to share!
