Fortunately for me, I’ve always been a big fan of eggs, no matter how they are prepared. The 7 reasons to love eggs that I’ve listed below might encourage you to eat more eggs. They have gotten a bad rap over the years, but scientists have recently retracted their accusations that eggs are terrible for your health. So, read the list, eat some eggs, and improve your health!
These are the good kind of acid that your body needs. Omega-3 fatty acid is necessary for good brain and retinal function. Who doesn’t want to improve the function of their brain and eyes? I know I do! These fatty acids are very important for kids and pregnant women too. Cod liver oil and fatty fish also have plenty of omega-3 fatty acids in them, but eggs also have arachidonic acid as well. This is an omega-6 fatty acid that mammals require to help repair and grow skeletal muscle tissue.
Containing 6 grams of protein, eggs are a great source of protein for people who don’t like to eat meat. I’m not a huge fan of the texture of meat. I find I have to chew it over and over and over again before I feel I can safely swallow it. I’d actually rather eat a plate full of scrambled eggs than fight with a portion of meat for dinner.
A dark yellow yolk signifies the presence of lutein in eggs. It is thought that lutein helps protect eyes against oxidative stress, which is the cause of many diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, heart failure, atherosclerosis, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Consuming lutein also helps prevent macular degeneration and cataracts. I’m all for saving my eyesight and if eating eggs will help, so be it!
You can cook eggs in a number of ways; boiled, poached, scrambled, fried, in an omelet, Eggs Benedict, or Toad in the Hole. They can be mashed into egg salad for a sandwich. Deviled eggs are always a yummy appetizer for parties. Chopping up an egg and sprinkling it on top of a salad is yet another tasty way to eat these vitamin and mineral packed goodies.
Sure, that stinky aroma that wafts towards you when a hardboiled egg is peeled isn’t always that pleasant to encounter. However, the sulfur contained in eggs has many benefits. It synthesizes B1, it builds healthy skin, nails, and hair, and it also controls the body’s metabolism. Not only is controlled metabolism better for trying to maintain a healthy weight, but being able to digest fats is also useful. Sulfur aids in fat digestion as well. It may be stinky, but it is helpful!
How cool is that? I’ve heard of using instant coffee before, but not egg whites. This method was invented by a French cloth merchant in 1850. He would use the albumen found in egg whites to get the photographic chemicals to attach themselves to the paper. If you’re in to photography and developing your own prints, then this might be something you’d like to research.
Choline is a nutrient found in B-complex vitamins, as well as eggs. Of course, the same amount of choline that is contained in a single large hardboiled egg is also found in a pound of spinach. Which would you rather eat, an egg or a pound of spinach? The egg would provide you with only 78 calories and the spinach has 154 calories, so if you are watching your caloric intake then the egg would be a better choice. Having a deficiency in choline causes neurological disorders, liver disease, and atherosclerosis. I’d gladly eat a hardboiled egg to reduce my risk of having any of these health conditions.
I’m sure my 7 reasons to love eggs won’t entice everyone to go out and order an omelet at the local café. However, even if I can convince at least a few people that eggs aren’t evil and that they actually do some good, then I’ll be happy! Do you like eggs or do you force yourself to eat them because they are good for you?
