# Turkish Evil Eye Jewelry

A **nazar** or **evil eye stone** (_Turkish_: nazar boncuğu) is an _amulet_ from ancient mythology that protects against the _evil eye_.

It consists of concentric circles (from inside out: dark blue, light blue (or yellow), white, dark blue). Therefore it is sometimes called **“Blue Eye”**.

Known as _nazar_ (_Turkish_: nazar boncuğu or nazarlık), this talisman is particularly common in _Turkey_, found in or on houses and vehicles or worn as beads.

The **evil eye** is a widely distributed element of [folklore](https://web.archive.org/web/http://nersel.com/wiki/Folklore), in which it is believed that the _envy_ elicited by the good _luck_ of fortunate people may result in their misfortune, whether it is envy of material _possessions_ including _livestock_, or of _beauty_, _health_, or _offspring_. The perception of the nature of the phenomenon, its causes, and possible protective measures, varies between different cultures. In some forms, it is the belief that some people can bestow a _curse_ on victims by the malevolent _gaze_ of their magical eye. The most common form, however, attributes the cause to _envy_, with the envious person casting the evil eye doing so unintentionally. Also the effects on victims vary. Some cultures report afflictions with bad luck; others believe the evil eye can cause _disease_, wasting away, and even _death_.
