If you’re like me, the highlight of your summer will be attending as many music festivals as possible. I’ve attended quite a few in my time and have found that each festival is unique in the experience it provides. I’ve also come up with quite the collection of tips. 1

Plan Your Day

I’m not just talking about planning what bands you want to see, but also the logistics surrounding your day. Plan your transport to and from the venue. If you are camping, allow for plenty of time to walk to the venue. You don’t want to spend the day stressing about how you are getting home!

2

Pick a Meeting Spot

At the start of the day, pick a distinguishable landmark that can serve as a meeting spot for you and your friends. This will come in handy if you get separated. Mobile phone coverage can be sketchy at festivals, so a pre-determined meeting spot will be useful in the case that you can’t get in touch with friends.

3

Have Cash Ready

You may not be able to find cash withdrawal facilities at the venue. Have enough money to cover food and drink costs, as well as other miscellaneous costs such as band t-shirts and merchandise. Also have enough money to cover emergencies such as taxi fares home.

4

Stay Hydrated

Most music festivals occur during the summer months. This means spending a lot of time in the sun, which is why it’s so important to stay hydrated. If you are consuming alcoholic beverages, remember to drink plenty of water in between drinks. Dehydration can easily ruin your festival experience.

5

Wear Sunscreen

Most music festivals occur outdoors. Avoid getting sunburnt by applying sunscreen before and during the festival. Try and stay in the shade or undercover areas if possible. If you will be spending a majority of the day in direct sunlight, a hat may also be a good idea.

Wear Appropriate Clothing

Wear weather appropriate clothing. If the forecast is for hot weather you may prefer to wear light, loose clothing. If it is going to rain, pack a poncho or gum boots. Most importantly, wear clothes that you feel comfortable in. There’s nothing worse than being in a mosh pit and having to constantly adjust your clothes!

7

Bring Tissues

If you go to a music festival, it’s likely you will encounter a portable toilet. These are the bane of my existence but I will hold my nose and tolerate them. In the instance that your cubicle has run out of toilet paper (a likely occurrence), a packet of tissues will be a life saver. Bring some antibacterial hand gel for good measure, too!

8

Have Fun!

This is the most important tip of all! Enjoy the company of your friends. Enjoy the atmosphere. And most of all enjoy the music!

What are your tried and tested festival tips? I’d love to hear!
