8 Confusing Pieces of Technology ...
8 Confusing Pieces of Technology ...

There have been quite a few advances in technology during my lifetime. I’m old enough to remember when video recorders were an amazing novelty, how much fun it was to be able to listen to cassettes on your Sony Walkman, and the very first time I used the Internet was way back in 1995. However, in spite of having learnt to use lots of new gadgets over the years, there are some things that I have barely a clue what they are …

How many years has this been around? I still have no more than the vaguest idea what it is. Some kind of communication tool I think. One consolation is that my sister has no idea either – we had to ask my niece.

UPD:

Bluetooth technology, believe it or not, has been simplifying wireless connectivity since the late '90s. Think of it as an invisible leash connecting gadgets like headphones, keyboards, and even cars - without the fuss of cords. It's like a magical bridge for data; all you need is a pair of Bluetooth-enabled devices ready to pair up. Fun fact: its name and logo are a nod to a Danish king, Harald Bluetooth, known for uniting Scandinavia—just like the tech unites your devices! Now, isn't that a neat little icebreaker for your next family get-together?

BluRay

Is that even how it’s spelt? What is it with calling all these gadgets blue? Now, I get that this is some kind of updated version of a DVD … I think … but what makes it special? I have no idea.

UPD:

BluRay, or rather Blu-ray, with an 'e' ditched and a dash popped in for style, is all the rave for cinephiles and tech enthusiasts alike. Think of it as a Super DVD, holding five times more data which translates to sharper images, more depth in colors, and the ability to store all episodes of your favorite show in one disc. Plus, you can say goodbye to those frustrating "storage full" pop-ups. And that brilliant color we keep ascribing things to, blue, signifies the ray's color that reads the data. Pretty fancy, eh?

IPhones

What is it about Apple products that makes people go crazy and queue up for weeks? All I want from my phone is that it can handle calls and texts. I don’t even know what makes an iPhone an iPhone.

Android Phone

I just checked my email, and saw an advert informing me that I could check my mail on my Android phone. You what? What is an Android phone? I’ve never even heard of this.

BlackBerry

How come they didn’t call it the BlueBerry? Or the RaspBerry? Or BoysenBerry? I have a vague suspicion that it is a bit more than a phone, but that’s all I know.

Games Consoles

What is the appeal of these? Which is better than the others? Why do they keep bringing out new ones? I neither know nor care.

Have these been replaced by something smarter and better? I think it means personal digital assistant, but beyond that I really don’t know why people want these things. What’s wrong with actually – gosh – writing things down in a notebook?

Ebook Readers

Now this is something even a technical ignoramus like me can understand. What I don’t get is why it exists. How can you replace the pleasure of curling up with an actual book with reading from a screen?

Are you a gadget girl or a simple soul? Could you not live without all your technology?

I will never ever understand what makes a game console better than another or why people pay hundreds of dollars for a phone when in two months there will be a better version for half the price!!

I still believe books are better than e-book. I like reading Books over e-books. Flavour of reading is just yummy......

well, and ebook (I own one) is great because you can carry around so many books with you, and it takes up so little space.

Sheila, Are you talking about being in heaven? I have a small hut there.

Oh, you are so right)) I just hate all those things!

I understand the game console ones...because I play them. xD
