The KLM plane collided with the Pan AM plane (both Boeing 747s) in foggy weather at Tenerife, in Spain’s Canary Islands. 583 people were reported dead from this incident. The KLM jet seemed to have departed without permission and there was confusion over instructions given over radio.

A Japan Air Lines 747 crashed soon after takeoff from Tokyo near Mt. Fuji. Apparently, there was a rupture in an aft bulkhead seven years earlier in a mishap and this had not been corrected properly even after undergoing repairs. This led to the crash which eventually killed 520 people.

Considered to be one of the most gruesome plane crashes of all times, a Turkish Airlines DC-10 crashed near Orly airport in the woods northeast of Paris when a badly designed cargo door burst, caused depressurization of the cabin and led to the crash. All 346 passengers and crew were killed.

A bomb planted by a fundamentalist blew up an Air India 747 en route from Bombay to Toronto. The airplane crashed and fell into the sea on the eastern side of Ireland. All 329 passengers and crew were killed in the crash. The crash was blamed on shortcomings of the baggage screening system.

This is perhaps the least understood plane crash in the history of flying. A Saudia L-1011 plane departs for Karachi, but returns to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia due to an in-flight fire that broke out soon after departure. The plane landed safely, reached the end of the runway, sat there for 3 minutes with engines running and no attempt to evacuate. Soon a flash fire consumed all the 301 passengers and crew members on board.

An Iran Air Airbus carrying 290 passengers was shot down by US Navy destroyer Vincennes who mistook the plane for a hostile military aircraft.
