Throw It Away

There are some instances where objects just need to be tossed. This is the case when items are too torn up to do anyone any good or are so old that they are unable to be used. I know there are antiques and knick knacks that aren’t functional anymore, but usually these still look cool. I have a couple of items that I can’t part with, due to sentimental value. I know that when I’m gone, my kids will have no desire to keep them and they will eventually end up in the trash. I’m sure I should just save them the hassle and toss them now, but I’ll hold on to them for just a bit longer instead.

Turn Them into Something else

This is easier done with clothing. My mom used to make my sisters and I dresses out of my dad’s old flannel shirts and blue jeans. He always wore the knees out of the jeans, but there was plenty of good material in the upper portion. I see girls wearing neck tie skirts, which I think is an excellent idea for old neck ties that no one wears anymore. Take a look at your wardrobe and see if you might be able to make something creative out of your old clothing. I had a friend turn my pile of silk scarves into a long skirt for me. This was a great way to consolidate and to still keep something that I liked, but didn’t necessarily use anymore.

Rotate Objects

I have a tote in the shed that has random stuff in it; candle holders, coffee mugs, wall hangings, and various knick knacks. I find that there are too many in the house, so I will rotate items on the shelves from time to time. After I empty the tote, I replace the objects I took out with other things from around the house. This method keeps things looking fresh, plus it gives me a chance to really clean things off. It’s amazing at how much dust builds up after just a month.

Give Away to Friends and Family

There are always items that are dear to you and you can’t get rid of them, unless someone you care about is willing to take them off your hands. I think it’s sort of like when you buy something for someone that you would actually like to have yourself. I usually buy presents in this manner. If I have an object that I really like and know of someone who would appreciate it just as much as me, then I’m more than happy to pass it on.

Put into Storage

Storing items that aren’t wanted is a useful way to not only free up some room in the house, but also to still keep things you don’t necessarily want to get rid of right now. Most storage units are fairly inexpensive. There are also different sizes of units available to fit the amount of storage you need. If you have items in storage for multiple years and can no longer remember what you put in the boxes, then it might be time to find a new home for them.

Donate to Charity

Plenty of charities are always looking for items to help those who don’t have anything. Fires, tornadoes, and other natural disasters are often to blame for people losing a large portion of their personal belongings. If you want to feel good about doing something helpful for someone else, then consider donating unwanted items to a charity or church organization who can find people who are in need.

Have a Garage Sale

It doesn’t hurt to make a bit of extra cash from unwanted items. I’ve sold many things at garage sales and used the money to take the family out for dinner or something fun. If you can’t find enough objects to have a garage sale all on your own, then see if friends or family members might have things to donate. There’s no quicker crowd drawer than a multi-family garage sale.

I hope at least some of these 7 ways to get rid of unwanted items around the house will help you to find new homes for various household goods. Have you gotten to the point that it seems like the house is being overtaken by random objects? What methods have you used to thin out your belongings? Feel free to share any ideas you have!

Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

Donate to charity, garrage sale and recycling are my options.

I try to find someone who will need it more than I do and just give it to them. If I can't find a happy recipient, then I take it to Good Will or Salvation Army. I can't believe when I see some really good condition items being tossed out to the curb, rather than donated. The cancer federation and Veterans groups have volunteers calling around looking for people who might want to donate stuff, and they come pick it up right from you home. Catholic Charities and Jewish Family organizations also accept donations of usable items, and then they pass these on to people they know who need assistance. So think twice before you throw away a good item into trash!!!! One man's garbage is another man's treasure!!

My favorite thing to do is donate my unwanted things to Children's Wish Foundation. Recently I've been thinking of organizing a massive yard sale this spring with a couple of my neighbours and donating the money to this organization that provides clean water to villages in Africa by drilling wells for them.
