Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events are the best children books I've read. I actually enjoy them a lot more than "adult" books.

This is such a great list for kids. I have read all except Just Me and My Mom - I will have to get a hold that one for my daughter. Another wonderful book you might enjoy is called, Jazz Fly 2 by Matthew Gollub, who is this amazing musician who writes and performs music for children. This particular one includes an audio cd with a jazz ensemble and easy to learn Spanish phrases, which has really kindled my daughter's interest in learning the language. The story is about a rain forest adventure featuring a host of unique fauna including a sloth, spider monkey, anteater and jaguar — perfect for 1st and 2nd graders especially. It's so unique and fun to read and listen to, I highly recommend it.
