In DC: National Menorah Lighting. 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17. Celebrate the beginning of Hanukkah with speeches, music and the lighting of the National Menorah. The event is free, but tickets are required; call 202-332-5600, 1600 Constitution Ave. NW Washington, DC. The Ellipse is the grassy area from the South Lawn of the White House to Constitution Avenue between 17th and 15th streets. It is the scene of many events, including the Pageant of Peace and National Christmas Tree.

In Virginia: This weekend kids can have a Winter Party at the McLean Community Center. Saturday, Dec. 16 from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. $8 per child - $6 district residents. Adults enter free! (that is different!) Kids ages 3-6 pay at the door. Activities will include face painting and a reading of The Polar Express written by Chris Van Allsburg. Bring your camera to take photos of your child visiting with Santa.

In Maryland: Winter Lights in Seneta Creek State Park. Winter Lights features more than 380 illuminated vignettes and 65 animated displays in a 3.5 mile drive through beautiful Seneca Creek State Park. Theme areas include Winter Woods, Teddy Bear Land, Victorian Village, North Pole, Toyland, and Penguin Cove. Schedule, Directions and fees.
