Top 20 Recent Romantic Movies …

10. Two Lovers …

two-loversStarring: Joaquin Phoenix and Gwyneth Paltrow
Released: 2008
I really enjoyed this movie because it is a romance, but it is also a deep thinker. Phoenix plays a man recovering from a breakup who moves back in with his parents. He meets two girls- one a nice, marrying type whom his parents prefer, and one a partier (Paltrow) that he’s attracted to… I thought Joaquin did a great job in this one!

9. The Other Boleyn Girl …

the-other-boleyn-girlStarring: Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, and Eric Bana
Released: 2008
Can I just say that I think Eric Bana is incredibly hot, and I would watch any movie he was in? So, beyond that, I still really liked this movie. Portman and Johansson play the Boleyn sisters Anne and Mary, wife and consort of King Henry VIII. If you know anything about English history, you know Anne gets beheaded in the end. This movie takes many liberties with the true storyline, but it still made a great movie to me.

8. Elegy …

elegyStarring: Ben Kingsley and Penelope Cruz
Released: 2008
This is an interesting movie that I kept thinking about for several days after we’d watched it. It is the story of a college professor (Kingsley) who falls madly in lust for a graduate student (Cruz). His lust turns into jealously, and he fears that Cruz’s character is cheating on him. This isn’t a traditional knight in shining armor romance, but it definitely got me thinking about the nature of relationships … and I think Kingsley and Cruz are both immensely talented actors.

7. Nights In Rodanthe …

nights-in-rodantheStarring: Richard Gere and Diane Lane
Released: 2008
Of course, these two actors are such shoe-ins for romances… when I hear these names together, romance is the first thing I think of! Even though this title is totally weird to me, I enjoyed this mature romantic film. Gere plays a divorced surgeon who vacations at the same resort as the unhappily married and separated Lane. They experience an attraction to each other and weather a storm together, and then Lane must make a decision about who she wants to be with.

6. Mamma Mia …

mamma-miaStarring: Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, and Pierce Brosnan
Released: 2008
I always wanted to see Mama Mia the musical on Broadway, but I never got the chance. So, I was totally excited when this movie came out. It is a funny musical about a single mom (Streep) and her daughter (Seyfried) who’s trying to find out who her father is before her wedding day. If you don’t like musicals, you might not like this – it got some mixed reviews. However, I loved it! Love the story, love the sometimes questionable singing skills of the actors, love it all.

5. Made of Honor …

made-of-honorStarring: Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan
Released: 2008
This story is cute, clean, romantic-comedy fun. I really liked My Best Friend’s Wedding, and the storyline of this movie reminded me a lot of that one. Tom (Dempsey) and Hannah (Monaghan) are the best of friends for years. While Hannah is in Scotland, Tom realizes he loves her, but Hannah comes back engaged and asks Tom to be her honor attendant. Many romantic and funny moments occur as he tries to break the wedding up!

4. Waitress …

waitressStarring: Keri Russell, Cheryl Hines, and Nathan Fillion
Released: 2007
A lot of people haven’t heard of this little independent film, but I saw it about a year ago and was just charmed by it. It is the story of Jenna (Russell), a waitress married to a no-good husband. Her dreams of escape from her situation are derailed by an unexpected pregnancy, but Jenna finds lots of joy and love in her life. A sweet and satisfying romantic tale!

3. Then She Found Me …

then-she-found-meStarring: Helen Hunt, Colin Firth, Bette Midler, and Matthew Broderick
Released: 2008
I just love Helen Hunt, so I wanted to see her newest film. In this movie, she plays April, a school teacher going through a divorce and the death of her mother. She begins an affair with the father of one of her students (Firth), and winds up pregnant by her separated husband (Broderick). This is a funny, witty romance with a lot of heart. I really enjoyed this one.

2. The Reader …

the-readerStarring: Kate Winslet, Ralph Fiennes, and Bruno Ganz
Released: 2008
I heard about this movie when it was nominated for four Oscars, so I wanted to rent it and see what all the hype was about. This is a thought-provoking romance and thriller! The story begins when Winslet’s character, thirty-year old Hanna, has an affair with Ganz’s character, Michael, who’s only 15 at the time. They separate, but reunite years later for a court case. I won’t ruin the suspenseful surprise, but I will say that this movie will spark a lot of dinner conversation if you watch it on a date!

1. Slum Dog Millionaire …

slum-dog-millionaireStarring: Dev Patel and Anil Kapoor
Released: 2009
This movie is probably one of the best I’ve seen since the Lord of The Rings and the Notebook. Such an amazing story! And the actors seem to be born for those roles! Passion, envy, love, betrayal, friendship, money – you name it, everything is in this amazing movie! 3 hours fly by like one second. If you really want to see a movie that’ll move your soul, this one is to go for!

    Hi Katie,

I am one of the writers of an independent film called “Her Minor Thing” We put a lot of humor and romance into our film and wonder if you might take a look at it and put it on your more recent Romantic Movie’s List.

    Thank you!

      Maham,
Definitely Maybe was definitely cute. I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of finding true love in my best friend. It hasn’t happened so far. Keep us posted on whether you liked the other options on this list!

Hey Katie, thanks so much for the movie reviews. I’m watching ‘The other Boleyn girl’ right now. Thanks for the help!

And yes, Slumdog Millionaire is the top romantic movie of all time. I live in India and I can vouch for all the hardships that this boy (and girl) had to face. India is a tough place to live especially if you’re from the wrong caste and this movie is just a small taste of that; a very inspiring story! Thanks again!

      Shonali,

Glad you liked the choices though I don’t think Slumdog would have been my choice for a favorite romantic movie. (I’m Indian too btw). Oh well, to each his own :)
