I was watching a fascinating TV programme the other night which featured the canals and gardens of Xochimilco. The system, known as chinampas (floating gardens), of draining swamps and building up fields in the shallow Basin of Mexico lake beds was used to feed the population.
The "floating gardens" are anchored to the lake bottom by trees planted along the edges of the fields. It still exists and is a beautiful as ever.
