With winter coming, perhaps it’s time that we update our wardrobes a bit. Well, here are the hottest winter fashion trends that may help you in your winter shopping.

Not usually one to idolise the style choices of fictional teenage girls (childhood ‘Clarissa‘ obsession aside…), I have decided to make an exception and appoint Cassie from hit TV show ‘Skins‘ as my new style crush.

The show, which chronicles the debaucherous antics of a group of Bristol based teens, is dressed up in the kind of stylised, nonchalant clothes that make me long for the days of my own teenage rebellion. I’m hooked on the entire cast, but it is Cassie’s offbeat eccentricity that has really got me thinking.

In the same way that ‘Skins’ seems to have captured the zeitgeist of British teenagers (case in point, my 19 year old brother seems to think he is an honoury member of the cast), Cassie’s wardrobe has captured the way that British girls are dressing right now- she is the English eccentric for the Myspace generation.

More than just provoking a jealous ” I want it now” type reaction in my head, Cassie is a pretty accurate trend forecaster for a summer of style – all heart shaped glasses, floral dresses and butterflies and flowers pinned into loose curls.

She is like a metaphor for the current trend of ‘messing up’ high fashion. Her angelic curls, quirky sunglasses and ethereal dresses totally remind me of Sonia Rykiel S/S 08, but a dirtier, more screwed up, spaced out version of the look. It is rebellious, dressing up box fashion and I love it. As Cassie would say ” Like, wow.”

Collective muses of the season seem to be “Big Edie” and “Little Edie” of “Grey Gardens” fame. The cult documentary, which followed the squalar, isolation and faded eccentricities of Jackie O’s aunt and cousin in East Hampton, directly inspired Galliano’s S/S show and is currently being remade into a feature film starring Drew Barrymore.

The accompanying ‘crazy old lady’ style certainly captures the zeitgeist of the season with its eccentric clashing, nonsensical styling and deconstructed elegance.

This surreal sophistication gives the impression of a little girl raiding the wardrobe of her aristocratic Grandmother; half dressed, clashing and happy in her own little world. Or of an old lady who has kept her designer clothes and heirlooms, but thrown the rulebook away. Just look at the heads swathed in cardigans at Galliano, lingerie as outerwear at Marc Jacobs or the quirky elegance and forgotten skirts at Louis Vuitton.

All of which make for entertaining shows; all of which may be a little over the top for real life. Get the look without abandoning your sanity with clashing prints, costume jewellery, ladylike accessories and paintbox lips. Just don’t forget your skirt….

I have always been an enthusiastic ambassador for the joys of coloured tights, so it is with a heavy heart that I announce my resignation. That is not to say that I am abandoning tights as a whole, it’s just that I’m a little bored of the block colour variety.

I am still a firm believer in the magical and economical ability of hoisery to transform a look, especially in between seasons. Fortunately, there is a whole line up of inspiration with which to spring clean for my sad tights drawer.

The A/W 08 shows were truly a feast for the legs – there was the modern take on fishnets at Rodarte which, although an excellent accessory for ’slasher movie’ chic, were not quite enough to coax my fishnets out of the dressing up box.

Similarly, the two-tone legs at Chanel might be best left to children’s birthday parties and Mr Lagerfield’s carousel. His lace tights, however, along with those that drifted down the runways at Emma Cook and Chloé are the kind of lace-spun and romantic legs that I am currently lusting after.

Tights like these remind me all at once of,

1. The white tights I wore as my childhood ‘Sunday Best’,

2. Ethereal ballet dancers in enchanted forests,

3. Prada’s Autumn 08 lace extravaganza

4. Spring/Summer 08 fascination with visible lingerie

All four being very good reasons to replace my tired opaques with lace-spun dreams!

Contrary to what the magazines would have you believe, there is a way to float through Spring’s romance-spun reverie withough having to overload your garden with never-ending floral prints. A new production of ballerina chic is a vision of femininity restrained, of a restricted softness that can render its wearer an honoury member of the Ballet Russes.

Take your cue from Riccardo Tisci’s “Gothic Ballerina” couture collection at Givenchy. A contrast between dark and light, between tailored binding and soft feathers created a melancholy Swan song.

Back in reality, pleated skirts are a refreshing alternative to last season’s skater skirts, and create a superior twirl. Give delicate pleating and innocent colours a gothic edge with studded belts and dark tailoring – think phantom of the ballet, not sugar plum fairy.

Frills, pleats and ribbons capture the feminine spirit of the season whilst keeping the look refreshingly ‘different’. Most importantly, this may be the closest I ever get to realising my childhood ‘ballerina’ ambition – I always knew the path was through pretty clothes, not stretches.

Yesterday, Victoria Beckham did what she does best: shopping in the most uncomfortable clothing. Wearing PVC leggings, guaranteed to cut off all blood circulation, Victoria made her way to the Balenciaga store in Mayfair, London.

Yesterday CasaSugar tipped us off to a great bargain on the Viva Terra Porcelain Branch Teapot. I loved the woodsy look and it got me curious about the whole branch trend in general. I’ve seen it in many home-decorating elements and knew that I’d find a similar pattern in kitchenware. With that in mind I went shopping and rounded up a bunch of really neat branch items. It’s official, ladies. Pearls are no longer just for your grandmother, great-aunt Frances, and job interviews. Sarah Jessica Parker was seen wearing long strands of them looped over a little black dress, and I’ve got to say, she looked fabulous.

Along with the more tailored, 1950s-inspired looks that we saw for the Fall 2008 collections, it’s a perfect time for pearls to make a comeback.

J. Crew, a go-to resource for preppy fashion, already has several options for pearls in the form of rings, bracelets and necklaces. My personal favourite is this long pearl necklace tied with a bit of black ribbon�”it’s a much more whimsical interpretation of the classic pearl necklace.

Neiman Marcus has a wide selection of pearl items from jeweler Majorca, and net-a-porter has this lovely oversized pearl ring from costume jeweler Kenneth Jay Lane.

The best thing is, if you’re shopping on a budget it is so easy to interpret this trend for your own look. Costume pearls abound at high street stores, make this a trend everyone can follow without the buyer’s remorse!

The see-through fabrics on spring runways were a bit more scandalous than those that came out of the woodwork for fall, so you should have plenty of options at mass market retailers and malls in the coming months.

We’ve had the romantic catwalk rundown and now here are my picks from the high street. To make this look work without looking cloyingly sickly team floaty dresses with grey tights and chunky sandals.

This week ShinyStyle and its U.K. sister-site Catwalk Queen are bringing you the best spring trends, and we’re starting you off with one of our favorites.

Nautical is nothing new, but there is something new in nautical.

Denim seems to be having a bit of a moment. More than usual, that is. Pale and, more alarmingly, stonewash denim is invading our nation’s streets and magazines at a swift pace.

The current incarnation of “it” denim seems to be a hybrid between a kind of 90’s shredded tomboy (see Christopher Kane S/S 08) and hippy pilgrimage to 70’s Marrakech (see pale wide legged flares, well, everywhere). This eclectic denim lovechild is getting me excited about a fabric that I have never been particularly keen on ( I’m not really a jeans and t-shirt type of girl).

The new flood of inspiration seems to be injecting a much needed dose of personality into everyone’s favourite basic. Pale denim may be slightly trickier to wear and, yes, possibly less kind on the thighs but it also conjures up enticing visions of hazy summers gone by.

Such was my seduction that I have delved back into my “90’s/ Kylie Minogue” phase (infinately more stylish than it sounds….) and emerged clutching a boxy little stonewash denim jacket which adds a nostalgic touch to spring’s floral dresses. And I must admit, the combination did give me a certain sense of rebellious satisfaction as I wore it in a room of top to toe ‘designer smart’ recently.

Just as long as everyone is clear on the denim jacket / jeans rule…….

Oh, Kate. Just after I finish gushing about how cool you are, how gorgeous, how unique, how you have impeccable taste in fashion, you have to go and do something like this.

Why, oh why did you find it necessary to wear arm warmers?

The dress by itself isn’t too bad, not necessarily my first choice but with her sartorial je ne sai quois Kate could surely pull it off. The shoes are fab, her makeup is fab and totally understated (which is perfect, she really doesn’t need any makeup) and her sleek hair is the perfect counterpart to the fussy ruffles of the dress. But … arm warmers??? Seriously!

If she was cold, she could have jumped on the shrunken motorcycle jacket bandwagon. With the funky twists and interpretations she generally has of mainstream fashion, she could have worn it in purple, or navy, or forest green … or ANYTHING but arm warmers …

I have always had a soft spot for lace. Any fabric which makes me think of veiled ladies from old novels and Victorian dolls has absolutely got me seduced. How lovely, then, to see that lace seems to have woven its way onto the A/W runways. The fragile lace slips and tights at Emma Cook showed a delicate ‘heartbreak’ incarnation perfect for running through cobbled streets at twilight.

Meanwhile, at Prada the fabric held a much sterner tone, with the tailored outfits in full lace suggesting a modern take on ‘Sunday Best’. Suddenly, lace seems to be shedding its twee associations and spinning forwards in colour, structure and tailoring to a kind of perverted elegance.

Usually confined to the antique lace ribbons I tie in my hair, it may be time to have some fun and venture into lacier ground. Fortunately I suspect that this is a trend which will seep very quickly down to the High Street so we can all float through lace-spun dreams of Victorian photographs…..

Last night Madonna was inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, in a ceremony held at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York.

The Material Girl shocked some – not those who have seen her Sex book – by wearing a transparent Chanel Spring 2008 dress with white sequin detailing and a black bow. She completed her ensemble with a pair of black leather knee-high boots and a bracelets.

This is not the first time this year we have seen Madonna in her pants. Last month at the press conference for the film Filth And Wisdom at the Berlin Film Festival, Madonna wore a similar sheer dress.

It is only a matter of time before she takes this look one step further.

As I mentioned in my runway round ups last year, transparency was featured in many shows. From the lighter, softer side at Prada and Giambattista Valli, to the more edgier, darker designs of Rodarte and Dolce & Gabbana.

You should not be surprised that trendsetters such as Tilda Swinton in Jil Sander, Nicole Kidman in Prada and Victoria Beckham in Marc Jacobs have already worn this trend.

It was hard to find many transparent styles on the web. But of course NET-A-PORTER.COM and TopShop.com are the well up on the trend.
