I came across it last weekend while at a crab-feed fund raiser for the 49ers. Instantly hundreds of varieties come to mind: place limes in the middle for a St. Patrick’s Day party or scatter dyed eggs in the grass for an Easter brunch. At only $11.00 a tray, fresh wheatgrass is affordable and fabulous.

I talked to a local florist and a grocery bag filled with day-old rose petals costs $30-40, much less than the fresh cut flowers. If your florist doesn’t have day-old roses, purchase cheap roses from Safeway or Trader Joe’s. Usually you can get a dozen roses for under $10, but you’ll have to take them apart yourself. If that doesn’t fit into your budget, silk rose petals are super cheap at a craft store.

Create a mystical mood by arranging candles in a beautiful pattern. Hang paper lanterns from the chandelier and ceiling.

A tangerine tree is festive and will bring the party good luck. Fill red fish bowl vases with white blossoms and run them down the center of the table between votives.

When I walked into the press preview, a sixth of the ballroom had been done up like it would on Oscar night. From the ceiling to the floor, not a single detail was overlooked. The ceiling was coated in glass bubbles that reflect the tiny lights, creating a starry look. The floor was coated in red carpet with gold runners, and the flowers — red roses and gold orchids — matched as well. The tables were either cozy lush velvet or cool, mirrored and sleek. The silverware was gold and the plates were clear. Mirrored walls and railings add another dimension, while mirrored tables and tufted chairs break up the space.
