The New Green Consumer Guide by Julia Hailes was published on 21st May 2007. Written by the author of the original Green Consumer Guide, which was released way back in 1988, this is much more than an updated version. This new book has sections on home and garden, food and drink, electrical goods and the office, plus travel, transport, fashion and cosmetics. Each section gives advice, and information about which companies and which products are truly ‘green’ and which are not. The book is well written and makes going green possible for anyone.

Renewable energy versus the environment
There is a strong argument for introducing more renewable energy into the UK. Unfortunately some of these renewable energy projects will damage the local landscape and its wildlife. There is a big push by our government, notably by The Environment Secretary, David Miliband, Welsh Secretary Peter Hain and Trade and Industry Secretary Alistair Darling to make Britain the first country to derive most of its energy from the tides. One such project being promoted at the moment is to build a 10 mile barrage across the Severn estuary. This £14 billion project is being pushed a consortium of six companies called the Severn Tidal Power Group. It all sounds good, getting electricity from the tides, no carbon emissions, but…

FA Cup final leaves a massive carbon footprint
The FA cup final at the new Wembley stadium is estimated to have left an environmental footprint 3,000 times the size of the pitch! Each fan travelling to the game and enjoying the culinary delights on offer would have a carbon footprint 10 times as large as the one they would have if they watched the game at home. Based on an analysis of the 2004 cup final by Dr Andrea Collins of Cardiff University, the environmental impact of such an event is massive. The major factors are the fans’ transport requirements and the huge amounts of processed foods they consume.
The environmental problem with processed food is the fact that it is processed. The industrial process of making and distributing the food is causing the damage to the environment.

Modbury’s plastic bag decision: where it all started
The small town of Modbury has hit the headlines for all the right reasons. All 43 of its local shopkeepers have agreed to stop giving away or selling plastic carrier bags. It all started with Rebecca Hoskins. Rebecca contacted local traders, starting with ones she knew personally and gave them plenty of information about the damaging effects of plastic carrier bags, and more importantly, gave them information about more environmentally-friendly alternatives. She then moved onto the other traders, enlisting the help of some of the converts when necessary.

Hold the front page: Murdoch goes carbon neutral
How’s this for a headline: “Murdoch turns his empire carbon neutral” or this: “Rupert Murdoch buys a hybrid car” Well according to The Independent both of these are true. The owner of News Corporation has turned green! Mr Murdoch is aiming to convert his world-wide operations’ carbon footprint of 641,150 tons a year to carbon neutral by 2010. As well as changing the way his organisation deals with global warming, he has the potential to influence many millions of people through out the world with his media empire. He actually wants to use his media outlets ‘to raise awareness and to stimulate action’.

Graig Farm Organics local hardwood charcoal
Barbecue season is upon us yet again, but before you grab your striped apron and tongs spare a thought for the world’s tropical forests. They are being stripped of their precious trees in order for us to cook our chicken drumsticks in the great outdoors. In the UK only a tiny 3% of charcoal bought is sustainable,

Turtle bag
I must say with all this talk of designer eco-bags recently, I thought I would add something too, you know how much I hate being left out. Well you would know if you knew me! I have scoured the web and found something that ticks all the boxes for a stylish eco-bag. Well, it’s sort of anti-stylish chic really, like geek chic for a bag. The fact that it isn’t stylish makes it stylish right?

Green Day get holier than thou over Darfur crisis
Cynics among you may think this post is really just an excuse for an old punk to show a picture of the lovely Green Day lads, but as they have just signed up to release a version of John Lennon’s ‘Working Class Hero’ as part of Amnesty International’s Instant Karma: Campaign to save Darfur I think it’s more than justified! The single will be included on an album of John Lennon covers, featuring other artists like REM, U2 and Snow Patrol. All proceeds will go directly to Amnesty International.
