Tony Bennett night at ‘American Idol’

Front runners LaKisha Jones, Melinda Doolittle and Jordin Sparks continue to be just that on American Idol. Blake Lewis and Chris Richardson were impressive as far as the guys go. Probably the contestant in the most danger tomorrow night will be Haley Scarnato or Phil Stacey.

Blake Lewis- B+ I am not a big Blake fan but I thought he did a pretty good job with the swing classic ‘Mack the Knife’. I thought he had his best fashion style for week. I still believe Blake is the perfect match for Seacrest.

Phil Stacey- A- I am not much of a Phil Stacey fan either but these songs are right up his alley. He did a very impressive job although Randy and Simon seemed to disagree.

Melinda Doolittle- A+ Dr. Doolittle continues to shine and be my favorite. She sang ‘I Got Rhythm’ and Melinda definitely does indeed have rhythm. She is going to be hard to beat.

Chris Richardson- C+ Homeboy Timberlake was a let down this week. I thought he was under appreciated up until this point but tonight he seemed to be over appreciated by the judges in my opinion. I didn’t find it to be horrible but Chris has had better performances.

Jordin Sparks- B+ She is the young prodigy that could shock the world and win American Idol. She reminds me of a young Muhammad Ali (not sure where that came from). They say she is 17 but I think she has a forged birth certificate. She is light years ahead of any 17-year-old I have dated. Her performance was very strong tonight.

Gina Glocksen- D- What the heck was Gina thinking? I think ‘Smile’ is one of my least favorite songs in the world. She tries to be all urban alternative and she came out singing a song by Charlie Chaplin that Michael Jackson covered on HIStory. The tongue ring has to go. Although the rest of her makeover was an upgrade.

Sanjaya Malakar- B- LOL, I am glad I type this as I am watching AI. The pencil thin mustache and white suit about made me fall off the sofa laughing. Not a bad performance by Hairjaya. I found his vocals to be pretty good, he danced with Paula and he pimped a white suit….what could be better than that? He also got a hair cut and straightening job.

Haley Scarnato- B She is either really good or really bad. Tonight she is pretty freaking good. She is good with a cheesy Disney song or classical song. Everything was good about her performance except her green dress which did everything to highlight all that is wrong with her figure…..which isn’t much.

LaKisha Jones- A+ It is a good thing KiKi doesn’t look like Antonella Barba or Haley Scarnato because if she did they would have to cancel the rest of the show. It would be that big of a blowout. It is almost like she is making love to the microphone when she sings. Her stylist deserves a raise as she continues to look more and more the part of a sexy diva each week.

‘American Idol’ Men Disappoint Once Again

South Carolinian Chris Sligh was the best of the worst Tuesday night on American Idol. The men demonstrated once again that it will be a woman that will win season six of Idol. Chris Richardson and Sligh were the leader of the male crop which isn’t saying too much. Simon, Randy and Paula were all let down by the male performances. Sanjaya Malakar and Brandon Rogers delivered two of the poorer performances of the night. Blake Lewis, who had been dominating amongst the men, had a less than stellar night. Take a look at the Bumpshack ratings of the men from last night below:

  1. Chris Sligh- He continues to impress more and more every week. I have no clue what the name of the song was he sang, but Sligh did a very good job with it. He is funny, corny, goofy and might just be the best male singer remaining.
  2. Chris Richardson- He did a good job with a Keith Urban country song. He might be the most versatile guy in the competition. He doesn’t remind me of Justin Timberlake but Richardson is making his own identity every time he takes the stage.
  3. Blake Lewis- He was the leading male coming into this week but he drops to the third spot in our ratings. He did his version of a 311 song in which he sounded very bland. He was able to work in some of his beat boxing and even a big of reggae. Don’t worry, he will be back next week.
  4. Jared Cotter- At this point the guys got really week. Jared needs to work on his stage presence. It is like he is always doing the ‘running man’ while he sings. He did a pretty good job tonight and did a Marvin Gaye song last week which gets big points with me. He needs to work on his on stage antics which can be very distracting to the listener.
  5. Sundance Head- I sure would love to have Sundance’s rabbit foot. It has saved him up to this point. Last week he did a really good job with ‘Mustang Sally’ but took several steps backwards tonight. He attempted a Pearl Jam song tonight and it was not very good. There is only one Eddie Vedder and Sundance showcased just how good Vedder is at singing Pearl Jam songs. Sundance is popular and he will more than likely be back next week.
  6. Phil Stacey- I started off high on Phil Stacey but every week my enthusiasm for him fades a good bit. He is goofy and appears a bit out of place, especially being interviewed. We also know the real reason that he shaved his head bald was because he was going bald. He has the whole ‘family man’ thing going so don’t be surprised if he is not cut.
  7. Brandon Rogers- It is cool that he is a trained classical pianist but that doesn’t count on Idol. I believe he is too feminine to win this competition. Doing the Cyndi Lauper song ‘Time after Time’ while wearing a pink shirt might have done it with most of main stream America. There is a reason that backup singers are backup singers. That is not a knock…I wish I had 1/10 the talent of a backup singer.
  8. Sanjaya Malakar- Cut this kid. He is in way over his head. He seems confused all over the place from song selection, to fashion, to hula dancing. He would probably do very good on ‘American Idol’ in 4-5 years. I will be very surprised if he survives the cuts this week.

Men disappoint on ‘American Idol’

I have avoided the first five seasons of ‘American Idol‘ like the plague but one of the joys and pitfalls of the Bumpwife is being introduced to new shows, even the reality kind. So sadly I have to say I have not missed an episode of season six of Idol.

Tonight was the men’s night to sing on the American Idol stage. The women perform tomorrow night. There remain twelve men and women and for the next three weeks two of each will be eliminated until six gals and six guys remain.

The men flat out sucked tonight. It was like watching the worst of the 70’s slow ballads being done by karaoke singers. The men will have to pick it up next week or a woman will walk away with the season six title. Out of the twelve men tonight I would say that three were decent and one of those was near good. The one being Blake Lewis, the beat-boxer, who showed he can actually sing tonight. He sang ‘Somewhere Only We Can Go’ by Keane.

Here’s a quick rundown of the others via The Mercury News:

There were a few solid outings — A.J. Tablado (fun performance), Chris Sligh (His smart-ass personality might overpower his great voice), Phil Stacey (maybe a bit too hairless for the masses).

A few average showings: Chris Richardson (Justin wannabe), Nick Pedro (pleasant, but not strong), Sanjaya Malakar (sweet personality and voice, but a tad boring), Jared Cotter (good looking, but forgetable as a singer)

Below average: Paul Kim (hate to say it, but it was a rough start for our hometown boy), Brandon Rogers (still a backup singer?), Sundance Head (he shouldn’t have been here in the first place).
Gone for sure: Rudy Cardenas (It’s tough being the first one to perform).
