Guerilla Gardening

Maybe I just lead a sheltered life, but I hadn’t heard of Guerilla Gardening until last week. For those of you who are also in the dark let me explain…there are groups of people who get together in the middle of the night with their gardening gloves on, clearing up urban sites that have been neglected by local councils, and planting flowers and shrubs to make them look beautiful. They don’t do it for money, or fame, simply to make the planet a nicer place to live.

More wildlife drama with Springwatch 2007

Get your popcorn and your tissues ready because this Monday Bill Oddie and the team are back for Springwatch 2007. This year’s show is based on an organic farm in Devon where Bill and Kate will be bringing us live footage of swallows, kingfishers, barn owls, badgers and other cuddly creatures.

Co-op launch new sustainable paper range

The lovely folk at the Co-op have come up with an ingenious way to dispose of all the unwanted faxes and letters generated in their head office, by recycling them into their new range of sustainable household papers. Including loo and kitchen roll

Graig Farm Organics local hardwood charcoal

Barbecue season is upon us yet again, but before you grab your striped apron and tongs spare a thought for the world’s tropical forests. They are being stripped of their precious trees in order for us to cook our chicken drumsticks in the great outdoors. In the UK only a tiny 3% of charcoal bought is sustainable,

A day out on an organic farm

Ever wondered what goes on at an organic farm? Want a pleasant and educational day out for the children? With summer fast approaching, I’m sure you are looking for fun days out in the country, especially those of you with young children. You could just do the usual picnic in the country or visit a quaint village, or sit in a country pub, but visiting an organic farm is far more interesting.

Transport the kids in a Kangaroo Bike

I’m a cyclist, and I have a young daughter, but I’ve never been comfortable with the idea of her riding in a trailer behind the bike. I think they are too low, and vulnerable, and I’d hate not being able to see her, so we use a bike seat, but I would swap that in a second for one of these beauties by Kangaroo Bike. This is essentially a trike with front mounted ‘cabin’. The bike frame is made of aluminium, so it’s both light and strong. It has a 3-point steering system and independent suspension on the front, so the handling is great. It has hydraulic brakes…

International Dawn Chorus Day

If you happen to be up and about at 4.30am on 6th May (I am often, thanks to my young daughter!) then you can take part in International Dawn Chorus Day. It’s aim is to focus on the great things in nature and, for a while at least, to put out of your mind the problems our planet is facing. All over the world people will be getting up at the crack of dawn and stepping outside to listen to the wonderful dawn chorus. It’s going to be one of the biggest birdwatching events in history…

Dalby Forest eco friendly visitor centre opens

A new cutting edge, eco friendly, visitor centre has opened in the heart of the North York Moors. Dalby Forest visitor centre, a Forestry Commission property, has been constructed in natural materials and is the centrepiece of a £4.3m regeneration project. It’s main aim is to show how modern construction can be ‘green’ with the use of sustainable and local materials.

Kodak Gallery: the first carbon neutral pro cycling team

This story was of particular interest to me as it contains two of my favourite things…beer and men with shaved legs! ‘Kodak Gallery pro cycling team presented by Sierra Nevada Brewing Company’ not only get the award for the longest name in pro cycling history, they are also the first pro team to go carbon neutral…

Parents Like Us festival for children and parents

If you have children there’s only one place to be on the 11th to 13th May, and that’s the Parents Like Us festival in Edinburgh. In it’s third year the festival has gone from strength to strength. Not only will your tots get to hob knob with some big names from the world of CBBC, they’ll be able to take part in many activities such as baby massage, sign and sing, baby shiatsu and yoga. There’s also the chance to learn more about real nappies, organic food for kids and recycling. Tickets are £3 for each event (this admits two kids, adults go free if they are accompanied by a child under 5).
